Match Report

Well I lost the toss for the first time this year, but luckily Burridge opted to bat first (I would have chosen to bowl first so everyone was happy!)

We fielded a team with two changes to the side from last weeks win: Mikey Psaila & Zakk Raby came in for the absent Harriet Ruff & Paul Millar. We also started with 10 men, as Josh McCarthy joined us at half 6.

We got off to the perfect start with Luke Harrison bowling their opening bat off the first ball of the innings (Tom did exactly the same last year vs. Burridge). Tom Clark was the other opening bowler and ended with figures of 2-0-17-0. Luke Harrison bowled tidily again and ended with 3-1-20-1.

Martin Lander and Rob Carpenter were the next two bowlers, and again, they bowled well in tandem, picking up frequent wickets. Rob got the next much-needed break through, having been hit in the air over mid-on for a single, the mid-on fielder, Luke Harrison was pushed back by myself. Next ball their other opener decided to try the same shot and holed out to Luke, with Luke not needing to move a muscle to comfortably take the catch. Rob then proceeded to bowl their number 4 next ball. Things were looking in our favour: although their run rate was high, they were losing frequent wickets. Martin Lander was bowling well at the other end, going at just over 5 an over, which, given the context of the game, was very commendable. In Rob's third over, the batsman drove to mid-off and called a quick single through. However, he had not considered that the fielder he had picked out was Tom, possibly our best arm. Tom reacted well and threw the ball to the keepers end. I finished off the move, taking off the bails with the batsman well out of his ground. Two overs later, and another quick single ended in disaster for Burridge. Trying to rotate the strike, the batsmen ran to a ball that was hit gently to cover. Mikey Psaila picked it up quickly and after a moments hesitation, he threw to the right end. Rob took off the bails and Keith had no problem giving the batsman out (considering he was only about half way down the track). Rob finished his spell with figures of 4-0-23-2, and Martin ended with 4-0-21-0. It is worth noting that in 8 overs these two young bowlers had managed to pick up 4 key wickets and only conceeded 44 runs between them. At the end of 10 overs, Burridge were going at a steady 6 an over with 64 runs on the board. This puts into perspective how well these two bowled.

Ben Robinson then came onto replace Rob Carpenter. Ben has just started to practice the art of leg spin. However, things did not seem to click for him and he ended his over having given away 12 runs.

Mikey Psaila was brought onto bowl at the other end. Mikey bowled brilliantly. He got his first wicket in his first over, bowling a quick off spinner that moved about a foot from outside off to hit middle and off. Mikey quickly picked up his second. A ball that pitched at about middle and leg, and was spinning, was top edged between square leg and mid wicket. Zakk Raby called the catch from square leg and comfortably took it. This was especially pleasing as it was a skill we had struggled with in training but have worked hard to improve. The next wicket off Mikey's bowling was a few balls later. Toby Mitcheson was pushed back at mid wicket to ensure no boundaries were given away. The batsman spotted this and tried to gently hit into the gap. However, he misjudged his placement and called through a run. The ball had just got off the wicket and was hit straight to Mikey during his follow through. Mikey cooly turned and threw down the stumps at the bowler's end with a direct hit. Again, this decision did not trouble the umpire at all as both batsman were practically standing in the same crease staring at each other in disbelief. Mikey then got 2 more wickets, both bowled. He had bowled superbly and had prevented the captain from being able to bring back our frontline bowler, Tom Clark, for his last 2. Figures of 3.2-0-23-4 are a good reflection of how well he bowled.

At the other end, Josh McCarthy was thrown the ball for the first time this season. Having looked promising all season, Josh bowled tidily and also prevented the other opening bowler, Luke, from being brought back for his final over. Figures ending in 2-0-11-0 are not true representations of his bowling. On the final ball of his spell, a miscommunication between square leg and mid wicket resulted in a 4 being conceeded that really should never have been. Josh was also unluky not to pick up a wicket or two considering how well he bowled.

Overall, the fielding display, though disappointing in some areas (especially when put under pressure from quick runs), was a vast improvement on our last 2 games. The bowling was generally tidy apart from the odd bad ball an over. We were left with a target of 137 to chase in 20 overs. The Burridge batsmen were all of good standard and they batted right the way down, making our second occasion of bowling a team out even sweeter.

We opened up with a different pairing this week in Rob Carpenter and Alex Clarke. They started off well, looking like they were handling the Burridge quick openers reasonably easily. However, with 6 runs on the board after 3 overs, Rob seemed to be frustrated and hit a ball high in the air, and was caught at mid off for 1. Alex then followed shortly, being bowled in similar fashion to last week (trying to play across the line at a straight ball), having made 2.

The sibling partnership between Hannah and Tom Clark then picked the run rate up to around 3.5 an over. We batted well together and started to put pressure on the bowlers and fielders. Unfortunately, Tom was caught at square leg trying to pull a half tracker just as he seemed to be settled for a big score. He ended on 12 off only a few more balls.

Hannah and Martin Lander then put on another respectable partnership. Again, the partnership was broken just as the batsman seemed settled. Hannah was bowled off stump playin outside the line of the ball. Hannah also managed to get 12.

We then unfortunately could not seem to put partnerships together and wickets fell quickly. Mikey Psaila, a hard hitting, aggresive batsman came in at number 6 as our pinch hitter. He was however dismissed in true Mikey style- bowled off stump trying to slog sweep, for 6 runs. Luke Harrison came in at 7, but was given out LBW first ball. He felt it was too high, but Keith has been quoted saying it was 'plum', so it probably was out. Martin Lander was then stumped for 2, having stuck around to ensure a collapse would be delayed. Zakk Raby then managed the second golden duck of the innings and was bowled first ball. Ben Robinson also batted well for his 7 before being bowled. It was a shame to see his promising innings come to an end in the way it did- trying to slog a straight ball onto the leg side. Our last wicket then fell in the 17th over. Josh McCarthy was bowled for a duck, and Toby Mitcheson at number 10 finished 0 not out.

Having bowled so well, it was disappointing to be bowled out for 65. However, Burridge were a very strong team, batting all the way down and having a number of pacey bowlers as well as an extremely impressive left arm orthodox spinner who moved the ball beautifully. It would have been nice to bat out our overs and to have put a few more runs on the board. The batting is clearly something that needs working on. (Lester- a subtle hint for something to do at training? wink) However, there were many positives to take out of the game, particularly: the team's spirit throughout, Mikey and Josh's bowling at the death, the fact that we bowled out a strong team for a gettable total, that we held onto all but 1 of our catches and that we nearly batted through. Hopefully, we will bowl as well in 2 weeks time vs. Locks Heath (another local derby) and that we will bat more positively and threateningly.

Hannah Clark
