Match Report

Tonight was another lovely summers evening to be playing cricket. Our opponents tonight were Locks heath- the local derby. The wicket on the green looked, well, just that- green! Locks Heath’s skipper won the toss and opted to bat first, and I would’ve chosen to bowl anyway so that was all good.

Again, we had a change in our team from the previous week. Paul Millar was unavailable, so Sammy Floyd was called in last minute as his replacement. This was Sammy’s debut (as he is in fact an U13 player).

Sammy was given first over, with Tom Clark bowling at the other end. They both bowl well in their two overs opening spell, but the Locks Heath batsmen were managing to get runs quite comfortably, mainly due to a lack of pressure from the fielders. We ended the first fours overs with them going at about 10 an over and not looking like losing a wicket.

Martin Lander and Rob Carpenter were then brought into the attack. Again, the fielding was not brilliant and could have been better. Rob finished his 3 overs with figures of 3-0-23-0. Martin at the other end bowled tidily again, but also did not pick up a wicket. Martin bowled straight through his overs with figures of 4-0-23-0.

When Rob was brought off, we desperately needed a wicket, with both the batsman looking well settled and beginning to exploit the field more and more. Up stepped Sammy, the debutant. Sammy bowled a tight off stump line and picked up a wicket in his first over back, trapping the batman LBW. This was a key wicket in more than one way: not only was it our break through wicket, but it was also Locks Heaths best bat (a county left-handed opener). Sammy finished his spell for the day with good figures of 4-0-29-1.

At the other end, Josh McCarthy was brought on to replace Martin Lander. Josh was unlucky to end his over having been hit for 18 runs, but at this point (the 14th over), their batsmen were trying to accelerate their run rate, which had dropped to about 7 an over.

Ben Robinson, our new leg spinner, then replaced Josh the next over. However, the same thing happened: the batsmen were trying to accelerate their run rate and Ben’s over went for 11. However, it was actually a good over as on the last ball, the batman tried to charge down the wicket to hit a four at mid wicket, missed and was bowled.

The next over, Mikey Psaila, our quick off spinner, was bowling his second over. Bowling from the opposite end to normal, Mikey was unlucky as he did not generate as much turn as usual. However, he bowled economically given the context of the game. In his third and final over (the penultimate over), the batsman were literally running everything to up their score. However, the batsman tried to charge down the wicket (again) and was stumped. Mikey finished with figures of 3-0-20-1.

By this time, Tom was bowling at the other end. On the 18th over, he bowled a fast, short pitch ball that the backed away from and tried to avoid. However, he only managed to sthingy it up off the splice of the bat to Toby Mitcheson, fielding at cover. Tom and Martin enjoyed this wicket as it was a fellow South-East Hants player

Tom’s last over was an extremely successful one: a double wicket maiden which in fact brought the team 3 wickets. First ball, Tom fired in an impressive Yorker, which the middle order bat failed to even get close to, bowling him middle stump. On the fifth ball, the number 9 batsman edged behind and was caught by Hannah off another ball that rose sharply. Last ball of the game, and the batsmen tried to take a final quick single. Sammy, fielding at point, threw to the bowlers end and Tom took off the bails, leaving the batsman stranded. Tom’s figures were 4-1-13-3: another good spell from him. This left us needing exactly 150 to win.

Mikey Psaila and Rob carpenter opened the batting. Mikey got us off to a great start, attacking from the first ball. However, Rob did not have the same success as Mikey when he tried to slog across the line and was bowled for 1. This brought Tom Clark to the crease. Tom and Mikey batted well together for a while, until Mikey was bowled for 12 (again, trying to slog across the line). Alex Clarke came in at number 4. Alex was unlucky to be dismissed for a duck by a very good catch (for the 2nd week in a row) at silly mid off. Hannah and Tom Clark were now batting together. They put on a good partnership against talented spinners, with Hannah trying to rotate the strike so that Tom, our most attacking batsman, could have the main share of it. However, Hannah was caught off a top edge to a wide ball at point for 5. Sammy Floyd now joined Tom. He got off the mark with a lovely cover drive for 4, but next ball he was bowled trying to hit another boundary, this time to the mid wicket boundary. Ben Robinson came in at 7 and was dismissed for a duck by being bowled. Martin Lander joined Tom, who was going along nicely and looked set for a big score. Martin helped Tom to push the rate along and they put on a very useful partnership, which included numerous boundaries including a big 6 hit by Martin off his legs. Tom reached 50 at about 16 overs and was forced to retire, but still had the opportunity to return to the crease after we lost our 9th wicket. Josh McCarthy went in and did exactly what we needed: he basically was hitting and running. We needed runs and had Tom back in the pavilion. Unfortunately, Josh was run out for 6. Zakk Raby was then bowled next ball for a golden. Toby Mitcheson and Martin Lander knew that they needed to run every ball, and this eventually led to Toby also being run out in the 19th over for a duck. This meant Tom had 4 balls left to bat. He ended on 52 not out and Martin Lander finished his crucial innings on 22 not out.

So another loss, but again no-one should be disheartened by this. We batted our 20 overs through (for the first time this season) and ended on 128-9 (our first 3 figure score of this season). Hopefully, the character showed by the team will continue until next week as despite our disappointing start, everyone kept their cool and we ended the game with a very respectable score. Well played everyone and here’s to next weeks challengers: Purbrook!

Hannah Clark
