Match Report

Tonight the U15s faced Purbrook away. For a number of different reasons, we struggled to raise a team for today’s game. Harriet Ruff and 3 U13 players, Edd Ruff, Will Ruff and Dan Saunders, came in for Zakk Raby, Sammy Floyd, Ben Robinson, Toby Mitcheson and Mikey Psaila. Having lost the toss and been put in to field, we unfortunately had to take the field with only 10 players, for the first time this season. The wicket was very, very damp after the days heavy rain, and we all expected it to be very slow and low.

Rob Carpenter opened the bowling for us for the first time this season, with Tom bowling at the other end. In the second over, Tom trapped their opening batsman LBW with a well pitched ball. Although the wicket was very wet, Tom was managing to generate a lot of bounce, and was putting a lot of pace behind the ball. At the other end, Rob was bowling tightly but finished his spell after 2 overs so that I could bring him back nearer the end. Tom also bowled a 2 over spell so he could be saved for the end.

Edd Ruff, one of U13 debutants, took over at Rob's end and Martin Lander replaced Tom. They both bowled very tightly, making it difficult for the batsman to score, and brought the run rate down significantly. Edd picked up a good wicket, forcing the number 3 bat to try and hit over the top. However, the ball bounced more than anticipated and he only managed to chip it up back to Edd. After an initial juggle, Edd took the catch and picked up his first ever U15 wicket. Edd bowled his 4 overs straight through and finished with very good figures of 4-0-22-1. Martin was bowling very tightly too, and in true Martin style, he was bowling big out swingers to the right-handers. Martin bowled a 3 over spell, again so he could return nearer the end.

Harriet Ruff took the ball at Martin's end. Harriet got a crucial wicket in her first over. She bowled a huge in-swinger to their left-handed captain that took off his off stump bail that I'm sure Martin would have been proud of. She was also unlucky to not have another wicket when she bowled a ball that hit the stumps on its third bounce, and was called a no ball. Harri returned figures of 2-0-23-1.

Josh McCarthy also bowled one over at each end. He bowled well and was unfortunate not to get a wicket. His figures were 2-0-19-0.

Rob Carpenter was brought back on in the 15th over. He bowled well again and caused the batsmen a few problems. In his last over, the 17th of the game, he managed to pick up a wicket. The batsman tried to slog across the line and got a big top edge that looped to Dan Saunders at short third man. Dan took the catch easily and secured our 4th wicket of the night. Rob's bowling in his second spell was tight and he put pressure on the batsman when we needed him to most. His figures at the end of the innings were 4-0-26-1.

This brought us to the last 3 overs, with Tom still having 2 overs left and Martin having 1. They bowled well in tandem and kept the runs down at the death. Martin bowled a perfect line and minimised the runs scored off him. He was unlucky not to pick up a wicket at all (even though I swear I had a stumping off him, but it was difficult to see the line amongst the mud). His figures ended as 4-0-12-0, proving how economical he was. Tom was fired up for his last 2, bowling seriously quickly and generating unbelievable bounce on such a wet wicket. He also proved to be economical with figures of 4-0-15-1.

So at the end of their innings, they had set us a target of 126 to win. This was an achievable score we felt. We also should be pleased that we kept a strong batting side to a relatively low score with only 10 players.

Tom Clark and Rob Carpenter opened the batting. We got off to a good start when the first over went for 7 runs. However, Rob was caught in the 4th over for 1. This brought Alex Clarke to the crease. Alex and Tom batted well together and put on a good partnership of about 30 before Alex was bowled for 11 by a spinner with a strange action. This was a very encouraging and sensible innings from Alex who tried to give Tom the strike through quick singles. Hannah Clark then came to the crease but lasted only 2 overs before being bowed by the same bowler for 1. Martin Lander came in at 5. Tom and Martin were clearly trying to push the run rate up so we could compete with their score as it had fallen to about 4 an over after about 12 overs. However, they did not manage to pull it off and Martin was run out for a duck. Edd Ruff then came in. Edd batted well and again a good partnership was formed between Tom and Edd. Edd hit a couple of lovely attacking shots, but was caught for 9. Dan Saunders then joined Tom. He was unlucky to be dismissed for a golden duck when trying to attack and hit over the in-field. This brought the final U13 to the crease, Will Ruff. Will survived the last few overs with Tom and finished 1 not out. Tom carried his bat and finished with 34 not out. We fell well short of the target, getting only about 80.

However, we should not be disheartened. We played well with only 10 players, which is always difficult. Not only did we only play 10 but we also had 3 U13s making their debuts, and they all played well and should be proud of their performances. We kept the opposition to 125- a below average score in 20 over cricket. Although our batting let us down again, Purbrook were a strong bowling side with several spinners which caused us problems, and their pace bowlers managed to stop us scoring. Still, often more can be learnt about your own game after a loss than can be after a win. Next week: Gosport at the Green.
