Match Report
Three wins out of four for the U15As now after a good victory at Havant Park.
A prompt start was threatened by slow traffic after a car crash on the M27 but we did manage to get underway at 6 o'clock. Fraser Moon had barely had time to warm up before bowling the first over. With the score rattling up to 17 off the over, the home side must have thought they were on the way to a big total but Will Jacobs and James Kershaw (1-9 from 3 overs) allowed just a single run from the next two overs with Jammy capturing the first wicket, Jordan Waller's safe hands pouching the catch. And in the very next over a Jacobs cracker took the biscuit, rattling the sticks of the other opener and Havant were crumbling at 18-2. But the two in-coming batsmen batted really well, picking up single after single, our fielding very tight in restricting Havant to only the occasional boundary. Tom Farley and Ollie Challis took some mild stick in a 3rd wicket partnership of 70 in 11 overs before Sam Floyd took a spectacular one handed high catch at cover point as the returning Fraser Moon struck. From then on, the batsmen and batgirl struggled against Sam Floyd (4 overs for 13 runs) and Fraser (2-29) and Will (2-12) each picked up a victim to leave Havant's 20 over total at 107-5, only 17 runs coming off the last 6 overs.
Matt Spicer cover drove the first boundary off the 4th ball of Sarisbury's reply and Sam Floyd took three more boundaries in over number two. Both played fluently to bring up the 50 in the 6th over without taking any unnecessary risks. Sam was looking for his fourth successive retirement from his four innings this season, but at least he's now got an average (188) after dabbing outside off stump to the keeper for 34 (7 fours) with the opening stand at 63. Matt, back from four weeks out with injury, had looked comfortable enough to bat through but he played neither forward nor back to the skipper spinner to be bowled for 26 nine runs later in the 10th over. Despite quite a bit of playing and missing, Fraser Moon and Jack Cranston pickled the bowlers for a stand of 31 to take us within 5 runs of victory when Fraser was bowled for 19. Ollie Challis was leg before first ball as he, er, um, no idea what he was trying to do - but Jack and Rob Clinch brought the scores level. With the skies darkening and the scorers looking up Frank Duckworth's and Tony Lewis' mobile numbers just in case, nine dot balls followed before Jack took his score to 9 not out with Rob 3 not out, winning with 3.2 overs to spare.
A very impressive show. Some of the best fielding I've seen from a colts' team to support their bowlers and the batting was clinical until it became almost too easy for the two openers. The camaraderie is great among these lads and no doubt the amount of adult cricket they are all playing is helping to build confidence in themselves and each other.
