Match Report

Sarisbury U15A completed the double over Purbrook on a sunny evening at The Green.

With Fraser Moon not due to appear before 6:45, it was no surprise that we decided to bat after winning the toss. Sam Floyd deposited the first ball of the match over square leg for six and he and Matt Spicer took the score past 50 in the 5th over. Sam had hit an enormous six almost into the "white house" but he was first out caught for 34 with the score 58. Rob Clinch was bowled by one that kept low, even for him, and Matt and Will Jacobs steadied the ship in the face of some good bowling. Matt was unlucky to be run out for 24 by a direct hit from a grounded fielder at extra cover with one stump to aim at, but Tom Hopkins and Will took us past the ton before Tom was caught and bowled for 14. Scoring was difficult against probably the best attack we've faced, Portsmouth & Southsea apart, and we had to rely on a fair number of extras (32) including 15 byes. Jordan Waller was run out off his first ball and Will Jacobs (28) and Jack Cranston (9) fell in the last over, a double wicket maiden. We only just doubled our 10 over score (69-2), finishing on 142-7, but we felt this should be enough for a victory.....and so it was.

That much was clear within the first 5 overs, with Purbrook on 4-3. Sam Floyd, perhaps angry after seeing his batting average reduced to just 117, bowled a fiery 4 overs, returning figures of 2-4 (plus a dropped catch and a disputed catch behind), remarkably his first U15 wickets of the season. James Kershaw (1-9 off his 4 overs) was thankful for a great stumping by Matt Spicer, standing up to his medium pace, but his bowling did indeed deserve his fine figures. After the two opening bowlers' spells, Purbrook were just 14-3 off 8 overs, the match settled. It was the ideal stage for Tom Farley (3-15) to bowl his best colts spell of the season, taking three wickets in a run-less 6 balls to further reduce the visitors to 33-6 and the possibility of no batting points (50 for the 1st). Ollie Challis had no luck but Fraser Moon and Jack Cranston tidied up in the last few overs, Fraser bagging a beauty with a slower ball, caught by Matt Spicer, who gave his best performance with the gloves for some time (no byes). Jack took 2-5 in his one over, with Rob Clinch sniffing a second snaffle of the session at mid off. Purbrook's final total was 78-9.

A great display, with everyone contributing. Praise for the fielding again, with Sam, Jordan and Rob especially good today.

Keith Spicer
