Match Report
The Rose Bowl 'A' side last night recorded the first result of the 2009-2010 indoor season with a solid 5-wicket defeat of East Tytherley.
We fielded first and opened with Fraser and Jockey, the latter the pick of the evening's bowlers collecting two wickets, one bowled and regulation catch for new skipper Tom. Jockey also took a catch off Jewelly, and a couple of sharp run-outs saw East Tytherley rocking at 80-odd for 5 with several overs to go. We couldn't get that last wicket, their no. 6 content to play out the overs despite some unplayable bowling, until the last over when Jewelly went for 3 fours which rather ruined his otherwise excellent spell; and they finished on 114 for 5.
At least, I think they finished on 114 for 5; the scorecard didn't add up and the poor chap doing the scoring seemed to have missed 9 runs from the bat. Luckily Keith was keeping track of things on the electronic scoreboard.
Jockey opened with Tom and after 3 overs we already had 45 on the board, Jockey playing his usual mix of tip-and-run and hard hitting. Tom took a little longer to get into his stride but eventually both ended up retiring, Jockey on 30 and Tom on 26. The only wicket to fall was that of new 'keeper Jimmy Davies, run out for 3 after a mix-up in the middle. By then we were only 9 runs from winning, and Fraser and Carps saw us home, the latter bashing a 6 and a 4 off consecutive deliveries to seal the win with 2 overs to spare.
A very satisfying start to the new indoor season, and the team looks every bit as sharp as reigning indoor champions ought. However, we will need to tighten up on the wides if we are to repeat the success of last year: more than a quarter of the runs scored by both sides were given in wides, and more than a third were extras, which top-scored in both innings. Although an accepted feature of the indoor game these runs will be crucial in some of the more difficult matches.
That said: well done lads, and thanks for the entertainment!
