Match Report
Sarisbury's Rose Bowl 'A' team did a job on their Vospers counterparts this evening at the home of Hampshire Cricket, winning by 6 wickets in a complete thrashing that lasted a mere 25 minutes.
Batting first, Vospers looked to have got off to a flying start, with Fraz struggling to control his length and Jocky finding a bit too much swing. They seemed to be ticking along nicely and talk on the balcony was of having to chase a big score. Then the wheels fell off the Vospers innings in spectacular fashion. One by one the Vospers batsmen called suicidal runs or obliged us by chipping the ball into the grateful hands of our fielders, Fraz, Jocky and Carps catching one apiece, plus some regulation run-outs with batsmen stranded in the middle or backing up too far and not getting back in time after the shot had been played straight to a fielder. Jocky was virtually unplayable once he found his line, at one stage bowling 7 consecutive dot balls in his spell. A special mention for Jewelly, cruelly robbed of a double wicket maiden by taking the last wicket a ball too early. Vospers finished on 64 all out in a mere 7.5 overs.
Jocky and Tom opened the batting, facing some initially probing deliveries but soon getting into their stride. Only 9 scoring shots needed to come off the bat as we cruised to the required total in just 5 overs, with Vospers bowling 34 wides and 6 no balls to help us on our way. The game had started 20 minutes late but was over 15 minutes early.
One of the Vospers players was heard voicing his utter embarrassment after the match, it was hard not to feel sorry for them such was the beating they took. However, it was just as well that this match was so one-sided, as the umpires and scorers on duty did very little to inspire confidence that the score was correct at any point, with little or no communication between them it was left to the spectators to tell the scorer what to do. One obvious bye went down as a dot ball because the umpire failed to signal it, despite vociferous prompting from the balcony, and at least two 7-ball overs were bowled. In a tighter game these errors could have been crucial.
Still, we'll take the win however it comes, and this time it comes with maximum points.
