Match Report

Still haven't won a toss at home. Predictably, Mottisfont decided to have a bowl. As expected, the wicket was green and wet. We started off pretty poorly. Andy Evans, down from the firsts, showed what not playing for 3 weeks does. Missing a full toss that hit him bang infront of middle. Then I was bowled round my legs (still mythed), we were 18 for 2. Decided that 180 would comfortably be enough, it looked a long way off. Thankfully, the machine that is Clinch set about getting that. He looked like he had been practising in the rain for 3 weeks, timing the ball beautifully from the off. He and Jimmy Davis put on 74 for the third wicket in about 11 overs. Although they had got a couple of wickets, Mottisfont wasted the new ball, bowling too many wides, full tosses and short balls. Clinch fell for a fine 58 to a superb ct & bowled. In came McKeever. Although not realy timing the ball as sweet as he has done, still scored 38 from 36 balls to put on 64 with Jimmy, before a leading edge ended the partnership. Jimmy then was caught at long off for a fine 44. He couldn't have picked him out any better. Jay came and went and suddenly we were 170-6 from 30 overs. Pj and Danny then settled things down, before kicking on. They put on 63 for the 7th wicket, before Pj was caught for 35. Robbo followed bowled next ball. Millward next try to push the score on in the last few overs. Danny O fell last to the only ball that popped all game. We lost our last 4 wickets for 3 runs, which was a little dissapointing, to finish on 236 from 43.2.

Les And Danny opened up again. Les started with 2 maidens and Danny got rid of an opener, with a ball that was a little short, and never really getting to the batsman, bowling him. They then put on 30 before McKeever took a fine catch at gully off of Les. Danny took 3 more wickets (2 bowled and 1 ct & bwld), leaving them 66-5 from the first 24. Les finishing 1-31 and Danny 4-31. McKeever then went about mopping up the tail, bowling 3 guys (3-27) along with Jay getting their opener bowled for 41. Robbo came on to get his standard wicket (1-2) helping us win by a very comfortable 121 runs.

It has to be said, they were surprisingly poor. For a team who were relegated (only because they had points deducted) only their top 3 looked like scoring any significant runs. Saying that, you still have to beat them, which we did easily. We are on a roll at the moment, lets hope it will continue and really push for promotion.

Bondy

Another Match Report!

At last cricket again and Bondy went out to toss and he won for the first time at home (NOT) we were kindly asked to bat on a wicket that not surprisingly was a little damp. The decision to bowl first looked to be a good one for Mottisfont as they took the wicket of Andy Evans in the first over. That bought the Sarisbury run machine to the crease a little earlier than anyone would have liked but Clinchy got off the mark with his first ball with a nice clip off his legs through midwicket for two. In fact it was amazing how well he timed the ball considering no one has picked up a bat for two weeks. With the score on 18 we lost our second wicket Bondy being bowled pretty comprehensively, a good sight for their bowler not so good for us. Jimmy Davis back from uni joined Clinchy and so started our largest partnership of the match. Mike was the dominant batsman in the 74 run partnership with some lovely drives on both sides, that's not say it was completely one sided affair, Jimmy was running hard but not quite hitting the boundary on a slow (for The Hollow) outfield. Mike bought up yet another fifty, and long may it continue, but was finally out for 58 to a very good caught and bowled, the only consolation he had was the bowler was still wringing his hands for sometime afterwards. Next to come in was Matt our other form batsman, and it wasn't too long until he also started to find his timing. Matt hits the ball harder than anyone else in the team and with a naturally good eye he can destroy mediocre bowling. Again Jimmy played second fiddle in this partnership but he stayed in, running the singles (much to Matt's disappointment) and when Matt finally gave a catch for 38 off 36 balls they had put on 64 very useful runs. Phil aka Mr Angry, was next in but this partnership didn't last too long, Jimmy finally going for the big shot and getting caught on the boundary for a very good 44. We then had our two lefties together but Jason hasn't quite fired yet with the bat and only managed 4. It was then my turn, coming in at no 8 and with 15 overs still to bat I was determined bat out our full compliment of overs and it took me 12 balls to get off a duck. Phil and I just took it steady pushing ones and twos then at the end of the 38th over Phil decided that it was time to accelerate so I said I'd give him the strike, which I duly did off the first ball of the over and so did Phil, smashing the next ball over the bowlers head for six. If he'd timed or middled it we wouldn't have found the ball but as it was the ball just cleared the line :). Phil did have a minor altercation but that's just part of the fun of batting with Mr Angry and for the record I thought Phil was in the right. Phil was finally out caught at mid off and we had added a nice little 63, alas that was that the last four wickets managed only 3 runs. I was last out with the score on 236 in the 44th over a good total on a slow track.

So it was our turn to bowl and we started with the same old same old, Les and myself opening. Les started with two maidens whilst I took a wicket with my 7th ball that will go down as batsman's error getting though his shot too early (about two hours too early). Les and I just bowled wicket to wicket and the Mottisfont batsmen found it hard to get the ball away, Les deservedly picked up the wicket of their no 3 caught by buckets McKeever at slip. With the exception of their opener, the Mottisfont batsmen didn't put up much resistance and I finished with 4 for 31 off 12 overs and Les 1 for 31 off 12. Matt continued his all-round good season by picking up 3 for 27 to add to his 38 runs. Their opener finally succumbed to Jason and was bowled for 41. Steve Roberts got the last wicket LBW although he should have got him stumped the ball before with Dan producing some quick glove work, but for some reason it wasn't given.

Again a very good team performance and special mention should go to Bob for getting a pitch to play as well as it did considering the amount of rain we've had, only one ball misbehaved all game and it enabled me to get a batting average :).

Danny O'Connell

The Gooders Match Report!

First game after weeks of wet weather, on arrival at the ground it was amazing to see that the game could be played, it was still very damp and the outfield grass was long but Bob and his team did an excellent job in getting the game on.

Talking of Bob, before the game discussions took place with Bondy and the old timers as to what Bondy should do if we won the toss.

Firstly, Bondy did admit that he will lose it anyway, true to his word, IMO on winning the toss 99 times out of 100 you should bat first but I like all but Bob agreed that today we should bowl first with a wet pitch and new ball. If anything batting should be easier later on with a drying pitch. However, misery guts called it right when he said BAT!!!

As already stated Bondy duly lost the toss, again, and Mottisfont put Sarisbury into Bat. The feeling was 150 would/should be a winning score.

Bondy opened with himself and Andy Evans, I umpired both ends for the whole game as Mottisfont had no umpire.

In the first over I made a decision that I hate to make, giving Andy out LBW, as I said to Bondy at the time I do not like giving LBW's especially early on as the opener who suffers is likely to not be a bowler and not have anything else to do in the game.

However, Andy forgot the maxim play in the V early on and was trying to hit a low full toss thru square leg rather than mid on. He missed and was gone.

Clinchy came in next and I have no hesitation in saying that his knock was the best I have seen from anyone all season. Bondy however, a few overs later went to the Bowler who got Andy, Bondy was bowled leg stump, again, hitting across the line.

Jimmy came in next and he and Clinchy put on a wonderful partnership. Clinchy raced to 50 with exquisite timing and flowing drives. So impressive was his innings that when he was out for near 60 on 95-3 with the last ball before the drinks break ( 15 0vers) The Mottisfont players asked if the Firsts had a game today, and was Clinchy our overseas player, such was the quality of his innings.

At 95-3 Matt came out and he and Jimmy put on another partnership, Matt hitting some bludgeoning blows before he tried 1 too many and was caught.

Phil came out next and he and Jimmy put on another partnership before Jimmy was out caught playing a big shot. Jimmy's innings was 44 and he batted with common sense, running hard, except when Matt didn't want to run much!!!!!, and Jimmy punished the bad ball.

Jason came and went before another excellent partnership developed between Phil and Danny O. They put on over 60 runs together after a careful start. There was an incident during this period when Phil was run out by the bowler before he bowled the ball, without giving a warning. I turned the appeal down and then Phil promptly had a heated discussion with a couple of their players over the merits of sportsmanship, or NOT!!!!

I do not know the law it used to be that it was sportmanly to offer a warning first and then if the batter does it again he can then be given out. I think the Law might have changed recently and that you cannot give the batter out regardless. However, I refused to give Phil out because although I belive you must play the game hard etc, sportmanship should not be forgotten in the pursuit of winning.

As was said afterwards Phil could have an arguement in an empty room, and he would still lose!!!!!

When Phil was out right near the end Steve came in and was out First ball swishing across the line!!! Young Dan came out next and was out adjudged caught behind feathering a ball to the Keeper. It had nothing to do with the stripey rag he wore to the game, honest!!!!

Sarisbury finished on 236-9 and at Tea Time I think everyone knew the games was won.

The innings was a superb team effort with Clinchy undoubtedly the class knock, but partnerships were the key to this impressive total Jimmy, Matt, Phil and Danny contributing wonderfully to the final score.

The Mottisfont bowling was not bad the 2 main bowlers from the Pavillion end got swing and movement whilst the School end there was not much movement.

After Tea Bondy opend up with Les and Danny they bowled their allotted 12 overs off each without a break.

Les was his usual nagging length and although he only picked up 1 wicket he did get IMO their best bat out their Skipper who batted at no 3. Danny however, had better luck taking 4 wickets with some accurate slow bowling and some very injudiscous shot seletion by the Mottisfont batters. However, with and over and half of Dannys' spell left, the lads reminded.chided Danny to get his 5th wicket and by the drinks afterwards, Danny as canny as ever promptly bowled his last balls wide of off stump to avoid getting his 5th wicket!!!!

Matt and Jason came on next, Jason got a cheer for his first ball not being a wide and he picked up the only Mottisfont bat who had any stickability their left handed opener was out playing on.

Matt on the other hand took 3 wickets quickly all bowled with movement coming back into the right handers. Matts ability to move the ball in this way was unique on this wicket because no other bowler moved the ball like he did.

Mottisfont tail wagged a bit with 10 and 11 putting on 20 or so runs with typical tail enders hitting before Robbo came on and on his second LBW appeal I had had enough gave the lad out and game over with about 11 overs left and Mottifont well over 100 runs short.

The fielding again was good I can only think of 2 mis fields Andy missing a straight forward ball to mid-on and Phil dropping an absolute dolly and Extra Cover. Perhaps Phil can explain why he decide to stick his left hand out to catch the ball one handed when he had time etc to use both hands!!!!!

Danny, despite being a s??????r, kept well standing up to thel bowlers and maybe unlucky to have had a stumping turned down by the Umpire.

Overall another superb team performance, skippered again well by Bondy and thoroughly deserved win against a side who looked what they are a mid table team.
