Match Report

The 2nds played their first game for two weeks on a warm sunny day at the Hollow against Highfield, expected to be one of the stronger teams in county 3. Jason won the toss [3 in a row well done skipp] and chose to bat. Ozzy went caught second ball and a after few good shots Clinchy was LBW. This brought in Matt to join Sam. Against some pretty good bowling they put on an excellent partership of 99. They had to work hard, opening bowler Quarashie being particularly difficult to play. Matt was very unlucky to be run out for 42. The bowler dropped a hard caught and bowled from Sam onto the bowler's stumps with Matt out of his crease. Just after Matt was out Sam reached a good fifty. Then a mini collapse started. Reevesy was out caught, Sam Floyd unlucky to be run out and Jason after a few nice shots was bowled. This left us on 174/5 and the new number 8 coming in. With all the top order batsmen gone Sam started to cut loose. With my help and some dropped catches we put on 71, Sam going on to complete an excellent 115 not out and me 19 not out. 245/6 was a good score though more been has scored on a excellent wicket. We had been helped by Highfield who dropped 8 catches.

Matt and Les opened and it was clear Highfield were going for it. Their wicket keeper opened and did lots of lofted drives. One though did not work he got a leading edge off Matt and Reevesy took an excellent catch. After a mixed spell Les came off early replaced by me with a job of increasing the run rate. I kept it tight and got their other opener out bowl round his legs with one that yes did turn. At the other end Matt soon got replaced by Jason who only had a shortish spell. Jake then replaced him and despite a wicket with his first ball [a long hop clean bowled] had an off day. I finished my spell and Jason took over. At this stage Highfield needed over 100 off the last 10 but had wickets in hand. Matt had replaced Jake and Quarashie at the crease started a fight back. It did not matter were they bowled he hit some of the biggest 6s I have ever seen. Reevesy took another great catch in the deep and wickets started to fall as the big hitting continued. We took it to the last over, Jason the bowler. 3 to win. 2 wickets in 2 balls! 8 down. Then Scott their captain hit a 4 and Highfield were home. Still 11 points from a defeat is very good. Great innings from Sam sad we lost.

Keith Hammond
