Match Report

Craig (I am so hard I dont need to take guard) Raddon sees Sarisbury 2nds safely home after another exciting game at the Hollow.

South Wilts 3rds won the toss and batted first. They racked up 190-9 off of their 45 overs. Their innings see sawed along, at one stage it looked as if they would post a score well in excess of 200 and other times 150 looked unlikely.

Craig and VETERAN Les opened up and both bowled well, troubled the batsman beating the outside edge. The wicket played true but there was pace and bounce in the wicket which made for a cracking game of Cricket. Thanks must go to Bob and his staff for preparing such an excellent wicket.

Craig got the first break through and Les picked up 2 more after their opening spells South Wilts were rocky on 51-3 after 15 overs. From my end Craig impressed with his performance with the ball and looked very much at ease playing at this standard.

Jake replaced him and sorry to say, Jake bowled badly, 17 coming of his first over as he struggled with his length. After 4 overs he was replaced by Dave Agha and he and Jason bowled in tandem from 91-3 off 22 overs these two slow bowlers put the brakes on and between them picked up the next 6 wickets. Les replaced Jason to finish the overs and collected another wicket.

The fielding by Sarisbury was very good, not quite excellent becsue 3 catches went down, otherwise it would have been. It is really noticeable when the side has so many youngsters how the fielding in general improves. Saying that an old hand nowadays Ozzie took 2 catches at slip 1 an absolute snorter, Young Dan took an even better one standing up to Jason who got a ball to turn and bounce with Dan good enough to stay with the rise and snaffle an excellent chance, he also took a smart stumping for the skipper as well.

But the posiest catch of the day and TBH the best was young Sammy who after dropping a straight foward effort took a 1 handed leaping backwards/diving catch that was smashed and travelling like a rocket. The look on the batsman face when he realised it was caught and not 4 told the story!!!!

So at Tea the talk was have South Wilts scored 20 too many or where they 20 short. The consnsus of opinion was that with our young and inexperienced side probably 20 too many.

However, to chase down such a score a good start was a must and that was what we got with Ozzie and Graham putting on 62 for the first wicket in decent time against two good young bowlers. Graham in particular looked to punish anything that was too short playing some lovely back foot drives. Both though had their moments playing and missing and little edges however in the context for the game and who they were up aggainst it was an excellent platform.

Young Sammy promoted to 3 came in next and was out very quickly without addition to the score then Phil J came in and as Ozzie was struggling a bit against the left arm bowler Phil took the spinner on and was sweeping well.

Ozzie got a thin nick to the spinner and walked, can I say that this was a very good sporting gesture by Ozzie a pity more players dont walk when they know they are out. Perhaps the yongster from South Wilts who did likewise but waited for the umpires decision could take note!!!

Reevesy joined Phil and just as Phil was getting going he top edged another sweep off the spinner to the man on the 45. Next in came Dave Agha, and I must say although he did not score many runs he talked the most sense out there and helped matt. Play each ball on its merit was his catchphrase, sound advice, but he perished as did the skipper both driving half volleys with their weight on the back to cover. The shot selection was right but the execution wasn't!!!

At this point it looked like with only youngsters and old man left at 137-6 that it would be beyond us 191.

However, out stepped Craig and with Reevesy took the attack to the opposition, Matt scored a lovely little 25 before he was out caught at short Gulley, now 25 is not a big score and I am sure he was disappointed to get out but as it turned out his knock in the middle of the innings when wickets were falling around him was crucial. Young Dan joined Craig who as the title of this piece suggests, was not going to play finesse cricket, but rather if the ball was near enough for him to hit he was bloody well going to!!!!

Dan went at 170-8 with 6 overs left 21 runs needed, Old man came in and between the pair, some hectic running and bold hitting, we got home with no more hiccups. VETERAN Les even managed an on Drive for 4!!!! Craig finished up top score with 37 not out and a great game was won against two evenly matched sides.

With so many youngsters in the team 6 19 or under it was a fantastic win and the whole team could be proud of this victory. Well done lads!

Gooders
