Match Report

On a hot day, at a game that nothing was riding on as both teams were safe, thoughts were to bat first. However, after looking at the wicket which was green and hard, and conferring with Les and various other people, the decision was made to bowl first. The toss was won, and we got ready for a long hot first innings.

They got off to a good start, keeping at 5 an over for about 20 overs, with a large help from our extras. Craig and Les bowled well, but got nothing for their efforts as a good opening partnership developed. Fraser had an appearance with a few overs, but couldn't quite control the swing as well as he did at Andover last week. There were words from the opposition saying that 250+ was on the cards. However, after 20 overs, the bowling, and fielding stepped up a notch. So where they were at about 100-0 after 20, they were now 130-2 after 30, at the second drinks break.

A key wicket was taken shortly after which was their opener, who got a boundary here and there, and kept rotating the strike. He ended up on 70-80 odd, who I think was Dave Agha's first wicket. From here, the middle order who seemed like young big hitters, were able to pick up the run rate, running hard, and scoring boundaries. However, Dr. Mike's spell of 8 overs, 1 wicket for 28 kept the batsmen on their toes, limiting their runs, with only a few spilling wide for extras. Dave Agha also bowled tidily, with only a few going to the boundary.

Wickets started to fall regularly, largely thanks to the bowlers, as I think 2 or 3 catching chances went to ground, however 1 catch was taken off a batsman who scored 48, who was the last of the big hitters. Landers had a short spell, which I apologise for, but in a team with 6 bowlers, it was hard to share a good spell around for each bowler. Craig came back on, and bowled till the end with Dave, who both bowled well, only to be hit for 2s and 3s at most. Highlight of the bowling was Dave Agha, ending up with 4 wickets from 12 overs. Eventually they finished on 217-7, which on paper with our youthful batting line up, seemed maybe 20 or 30 runs too many. In total we bowled 52 extras, including 31 wides which is quite a large amount, considering the total.

Tea was nice.

Decided to open up with Reevsey and Sam Floyd, as I felt that they both deserved a chance to bat high up the order, and also my ankle was playing up so gave it a bit of a rest. There was a short burst of runs from Matt, till he got bowled quite early on. In came James Davis, appearing in only his second match this year, put on a great 100+ partnership with young Sam, who also batted well contributing to the partnership. Out next was Sam, after scoring 34, his best score in the second team as far as I know. Next I came in, and after a bit of a shakey start with a tricky bowler, settled down and 'just batted' Next out was James, playing on to his stumps I think off a big shot, at 136-3. He ended up on 79, which was a top knock, and very good to watch.

Up until then their fielding was very defensive, with 1s and 2s everywhere. But now with Dan Millward coming in, with 2 'new' batsmen at the crease, they became a more orthodox field. Runs were tight at some points, only scoring 1 maybe 2 each over. But as we got our eyes in, we both started to penetrate the field, and also found the boundary quite regularly, as the field started to get deeper and wider. I found I was scoring quite freely in the later overs, with nothing really troubling me from the bowlers. I have also come to enjoy batting with Dan, as he is a good batsman, but also runs well, pushing me sometimes, and also knows when to provide the strike for the other batsman.

Once we reached 190-3 with about 12 overs to go, there was a feeling in the middle that it was a foregone conclusion, and the fielders lost their 'spark' which was evident earlier in the innings. The runs were easy to come by from some part time bowlers, and Dan clearly knows how to count to 6, keeping the strike for most of the last few overs. We got the total with 8 overs to go. So with an unbeaten 82 partnership, Millward finished on 29*, and I finished on 62*.

Thanks to everyone who played yesterday, I enjoyed every moment of it.

And well done to everyone for all four wins this weekend too, making it even more special for the club.
