Match Report

Sarisbury seconds showed excellent bouncebackability after last week's shock defeat to beat Highfield by 115 runs and going back to second place in the table.

We showed several changes from last week with Danny O & Matt Mackeever missing PJ and Steve 'John' came back to a strong looking batting line up. For the first time this season Jason won the toss and had no hesitation in batting on again what looked like an absolute road opening up with Graham and PJ. It wasn't long before the score board was ticking along nicely with plenty of boundaries on a lightning fast outfield. Scoring at a healthy rate the openers raced to 59 without loss after the first 10 overs. After getting struck on the hand Graham was then given a life being dropped next ball. The first wicket to fall was PJ who was bowled for 34 with the score on 91 in the 19th over. Highfield bowled ok probably bowling too many four balls (as was pointed out to one fielder from the crowd) but maybe lacking some variety. Graham was joined by Sam who started flaying the ball around straight away in familiar fashion. After reaching his fifty Graham was next to fall to a filthy delivery for 62 as Highfield tried and succeeded in buying a wicket. Alex then joined Sam and continued to score freely. At 200-2 in the 33rd over a big score beckoned. Highfield were getting tired and chirpy in the field and not always appreciating the banter coming from some of the comedians in the ranks of the home supporters. Having completed his 50 Sam was next out with the score on 227 for 68 but was quickly back into the action as runner for Alex who by this time was joined by Reevsie. The sight of these three trying to sort out the running between then was hilarious and inevitably led to a run out, this time on Alex's behalf who had another excellent innings this time of 74 which had included 24 off the 43rd over. Sarisbury, who lost some late wickets in the pursuit of runs, ended up with a very healthy 313-6.

After an interesting curry tea courtesy of Dave Agha the game resumed with Toolie opening the bowling from the pavilion end. After an uneventful first over Fras was entrusted with the new ball and was soon into the action having the opener Wild well caught off a 'wild' skier at mid off by Jason off the sixth ball. Into his third over and Fras got the other opener out again caught this time by Graham and the visitors were now struggling at 25-2. Fras now had his tail up and steaming in up hill from the far end was again rewarded for his efforts having their no.3 well caught by Steve 'John' low at mid on. 31-3. Highfield then regrouped putting on 65 for the fourth wicket before Steve 'John' had their no 5 caught by Jason for 30. Fras was recalled for his second spell this time from the pavilion end and promptly knocked back the off stump and their no 6 to make the score 123-5. This soon became 126-6 with Dave Agha, not to be outdone, getting into the action when he got one to pop up and Dan took an easy catch to leave the visitors in deep trouble. The hapless Hart, batting at no 7 for Highfield, was given a spin lesson from Agar unable to lay bat on ball before being put out of his misery by Dave who had him caught by Graham for a torturous 14. Dave then got an LBW in what was turning out to be an excellent spell getting plenty of rip and Toolie got the ninth wicket bowled. No seconds' game would be complete without a couple of drops and Graham Flower obliged spilling two sitters before finally, at 8.15pm and the skipper bringing himself on to bowl to the tail, Jason got one to turn and Dan whipped off the bails to have Highfield high and dry on 198 all out. Fras was the pick of the bowlers ending up with 4-34, Dave Agar 3-37 and the others ending with one apiece.

An excellent victory, enjoyable game and hopefully a bit of momentum regained.

George Millward
