Match Report

At Wickham. On a damp pitch Greg our Captain was taking soundings from players as to whether to bat or bowl first if he won the toss. The decision to bat first was correct, as around 80% of matches are won by the side batting first. Greg opened with himself and Billy Allen and against some steady if unspectacular bowling made a great start putting on over 40 for the first wicket. I though Billy played with a good technique and Greg applied himself as he always does and put the odd bad ball away. Olly came in at three and IMO played the match winning knock of 40. He stayed at the crease for a long time and held the innings together well. Sean who came in at 4 flattered to decieve played some nice shots but lacked the application to stay at the crease for a longer spell. Ian clark came and went one of 3 LBW decisions by their umpire, who it has to be said gave 3 out for us as well in Wickham's innings. Craig was next and did not bat well looking short of confidence with the bat, Craig you need time in the middle and nets. Tom Clark came in next and put on a very good partnership with Olly, I thought Tom looked in good order with the bat and after Olly was out and with a few overs left he and Jake put on 20 odd runs in short order to help the side amass 152-7 off the 42 overs. Both Tom and Jake were not out.

The general chat at teatime was the thought that we had enough runs especially with the bowling attack we have. At the start both Tom and Sean opened, Sean did not bowl well he was too eractic and IMO tried to bowl too quick from the start without finding any rythm. Sean has undoubted talent but alas he cannot cope with disappointment well when things don't go for him. However with time and effort on his part he should become a very very good cricketeer with both bat and ball. Tom on the other hand bowled steady, nothing spectacular, and after I heard so many good things about him before hand I was a little disappointed with his bowling performance. That said he is only 14 and perhaps going from the 4ths to the 2nds was not the best of ideas and I hope Greg gives him lots of encouragement in the 3rds because Tom has potential.

Anyway at 40-1 in reply Greg brought Micky on ( from the wrong end and a little too early IMO) Micky bowled 4 overs took a wicket but Wickham's best bAtter was begginning to take a liking to Micky, So greg then brought on Jake and Mike Edwards.

I thought Jakes spell was good and Mike was OK neither of them looked like taking a stack of wickets but neither were the batters having it their own way.

At about 90-2 Greg made the most important change by bringing on Craig for Jake, and I must say Craig's spell of bowling changed the game and was the best I have seen him bowl in many a year. He consitently moved the ball away from the right handers by swing and seam, an excellent spell which got him 3 wickets and the best Wickham batter to boot, with the aid of the Umpire!!!! He was plumb though and the only decision I gave all game in favour of the bowler.

Mike Edwards picked up a wicket at the other end during his spell and from 90-2 Wickham had slumped to 114-5 Game on. Then Greg brought on Ian Clark from the top end and Ian showed all the bowlers how to bowl on a slow wet wicket. Ian bowled stump to Stump and picked up the last 5 wickets to win the match for Sarisbury by about 20 runs.

If the second team need a bowler to bowl straight and consistent length then Ian should move up he certainly should not be playing 4th team cricket on that performance.

In the Field only 1 drop Catch which was not straight forward, Graham Saunders took an absolute Beauty and Olly for once did not drop any that came his way.

Ground fielding in the main was good but on occassions some lads do switch off and this does not help the Skipper!!!!

What Greg has got from his team is a good team spirit players never gave up, although when the opposition were 90-2 it was bit quiet out there until greg and some of theolder ones started to gee everyone up.

Criticisms are not many Greg IMO does too much himself, and I have told him so on numerous occassions, he will be bored of it by now, and complaints have come in about his team talk huddle before the game. It is too long and players want to know where the guest speaker has gone!?!

Seriously though, Greg skippered the side well and has good support from the older players and it is a pleasure to be with the Team.

Gooders
