Match Report Meet 11.30 the green, Ray forgot to pick me up so i was picked up on route. Billy despite getting up at ten am still managed to be late, something to do with his mum and the dog !!. Missed two ferries eventually caught the 1.45pm. Picked up by opposition arrived at the ground around 2.15pm. Felt like we had allready done a full day. Beautiful ground best on the island, hope to be able to play them on tour if not this year then next. Lost toss, fielded. Dr Mike and Jake opened up steady bowling slow start. Martin came on Jake's end bit nervous but gradually improved just got into his stride then had to come off, stupid rule he's not a fast bowler so I can't see why he has to stop at five overs. Sean took over from Mike bowled with pace and aggression, will make a first player in the future. We got a run out but wickets were hard to come by, enter Brogan. We managed to drop 5 catches of him and he still finished with 3 wickets he is a legend. Jake came back on and bowled a good spell towards the end his slower ball is actually working at last. Final total 145. Best tea so far great clubhouse. I asked to be dropped down the order as I didn't feel to good, I think Greg was going to bat me at seven all along but said ok. Not a good start Graham lbw, Greg caught behind, Matt bowled, Billy and Paul back in the pavilion 30 odd for 5. It was at this stage that I was considering Sunday cricket, surely we couldn't be out for less than last week. Met Sean in the middle and just said try and play yourself in hit the bad ball, this we did and 42 was a distant dream. Sean played some good shots and was out to the best ball of the day pitched leg hit off. In came Jake, out first ball caught and bowled, to be fair if the bowler had not caught it he would have lost most of his teeth. I think we were about 70 for 7 at this stage I couldnt see how we could win but when you have Dr Mike at the other end anything is possible, he played some cracking cut shots even hitting their opener for two fours that Pete Hammond would have been proud of. When he was out caught and bowled we still needed another 25 odd runs. In came Martin to face their opener he backed away from the first one but still middled it. Then their skipper made a mistake he should have brought back the other opener instead he turned to a leggie who didn't want to bowl. Myself and Martin managed to push a few singles and hit the odd boundary getting us closer to the target. I did enjoy hitting the opener off legs for a couple of fours, I was standing two foot outside my crease somehthing Bob taught me a long time ago. The end is a bit of a blur I think Martin finished it with a single and he was 14 not out I am still not sure what I ended up with, today though I can't walk. A very interesting day good performances all round. Need catching practice. Good debut Martin very cool at the end. PS thanks to Ray for driving. Andy Oliphant |
