Match Report

Played at a godforsaken place near to the hub of Leigh Park ;-)

On arrival we went to expect the pitch and saw what a wonderful condition it was and how essential it was to bat first. Greg also selflessly said he would drop down the order for the first time this year and allow young Tom to have ago on such an excellent batting wicket.

I must say IMO that Greg's attitude to this was refreshing to offer an opportunity to a young 'un was fantastic :-)

Ok that is slightly wrong, what Greg did was to coin a phrase from Olly, Greg did a Joyce ala Liss away some years ago. In other words we rocked up saw that the pitch was a joke and Greg decided he didn't fancy it and set up young Tom to take the fall, whilst putting himself down the middle order to bat hopefully against Purbrook's weaker bowlers ;D

Greg lost the toss was asked to bat and young Tom opened with Oz. The pitch was wet hardly any markings and it was overcast and drizzling.

Tom and Oz batted really well together, circumspect early on where the ball swung a bit early doors but suprisingly there was a bit of bounce no lateral movement and very very slow.

The Purbrook bowlers in what was a very very young side didn't bowl badly but Oz in particular managed to get the measure and soon was lofting the ball over the bowlers head with regularity. The fact that the Purbrook skipper kept a tight ring formation and not protect the area Oz likes to hit it was a mistake.

Tom and Oz put on 120 at the drinks break when Tom had to retire ill. Tom only made 30 N.O. in the partnership but Tom played Straight ran well and looked to put the bad ball away, and sensibly gave Oz the strike whenever he could.

Matt came in next played sensibly early doors to get used to the pace of the wicket then opened up and hit a quick 40 odd. Oz finally gave his wicket away, tiredness and concentration or the lack of being his downfall.

Then came in Olly and Graham Flower with 10 overs to go and on 188-2 I was worried we might not make 200 ;-)

Olly and Graham both played out a maiden each in an effort to outdo each other and the thought of Not outs looming large they did in the end get a bit of a move on and brought the total to 238-2 at 42 overs. Graham even managed to hit a 6 :-O

After tea young Jake opened up and got the first 3 wickets bowled well 2 bowled 1 caught and his spell did include an extraordinary amount of slower deliveries. Greg was heard to say to him only 1 an over Jake and in this particular over Jake bowled 4 slower ones :-/

Craig opened from the other end and bowled well but with no luck, perhaps he nees to ask Jake how to bowl his variety?!?!

Micky came on and picked up 3 wickets, Ian Clarke got one and Graham swish Saunders in his last appearance of the season got 2 with the other being a run out (by Matt)

Purbrook finished up on 50 all out off 24 overs and you can tell that although it was good to see them field a young side this test for them was a step too far.

Fielding on the whole was good, Oz in the slips let one go under his feet for 4 and Greg as all good skippers do promptly sacked a slip fielder because of it. However he got the wrong man and banished Swish at first slip to the outer.

Matt showed his class in the field by dropping an absolute dolly off of Jake but Jake did get the lad 2 balls later with a fine catch by Oz.

Overall the spirit within the side is excellent Greg has a good bunch of boys and everyone has an opportunity to do something even though we only lost 2 wickets when batting.

Well done to everyone involved today even Greg for missing out on opening ;-)
