Match Report

The thirds lost their first league game at CBBEA by 30 runs having been the better team for three quarters of the match.

CBBEA won the toss and decided to bat on a wicket that had some bounce (at least at first) when the ball wasn't shooting along the floor.

The openers got off to a good start and generally looked a cut above last year's batsmen (proper cover drives!). Jake got an LBW with a shooter having come back well after an expensive opening over. Mike bowled steadily and Craig picked up the second wicket caught behind to leave our oppo 50-2.

The innings then took on a familiar pattern; tight bowling, excellent fileding (esp tosters, jake and mike) ; gritty league batting. Partnerships of 25 became the norm and CBBEA finished on 150-8. Jake got 2, Robbo 1; Craig ! and I got 4: all 5 bowlers bowled steadily and we were happy with our efforts on a small ground; with a rough outfield against a decent team on a hot day.

Matt R and Graham then opened in some style until Matt pushed a catch to cover point for 8. Tosders started with a 6 and with Graham played comfortably to the drinks interval at 70-1. Graham esp played with a style that suggests a big score should see him being seriously considered for the 2nds. It was difficlut to see us losing from here with CBBEA on their knees. Howevevr, CBBEA's first change bowler, Birt had looked a cut above and bowled graham for 36 ( 75-2) ; Graham playing across the line.

Tosders then was bowled for 26 and although the Floyds looked okay when Sam went for 3 we were starting to struggle.

What followed was ugly: Stuart 0, Greg 2 ; Jake 6; Robbo 1 and me 0. John Floyd played well for 26 but without decent support and we ended up losing our last 9 wickets for 50 to be all out for 124. Birt 4-17.

Its always gutting to lose games you should have won but there were plenty of positives with the bowlers all doing well; the fielding excellent and Graham probably playing his most accomplished innings for the club.

As might be expected with promotion, the opposition were slightly better than most of last year with everyone up to 8 batting well, few 4 balls and no-one over 25.

Ian Clark

Sarisbury thirds' hopes of a winning start to their 2008 campaign were dashed after losing to CBBEA by 30 runs at the Winton Oval Bournemouth on Saturday.Having bowled well and been committed in the field,Sarisbury were able to restrict the opposition to 154 and in reply were 75-1 from 17 overs seemingly well on the road to victory. However, the loss of Graham Flower, who top scored with 36 and had put on 51 for the second wicket with Paul Tosdevin(25),led to a collapse of 9 wickets for 49 runs.Sarisbury can draw positives from the match -the top order batting and the disciplined bowling and fielding and though a batting net would help a few batsmen who were out of touch , nothing beats match practice out in the middle.Earlier inthe day Ian Clark(4-38) and Jake Scott(2-37) had taken 6 of the 8 wickets to fall.
