Match Report

Sarisbury thirds followed last week's 3 wicket win over Rowner with a 38 run win over Waterlooville seconds at East Meon. Sarisbury were put in on a low bouncing spongy wicket and openers Graham Flower and Matt Reeves took a good look at the pitch and the opening attack, which featured the 72 year old West Indian Hampshire cricket league legend Stan Rudder. The pair laid a good foundation of 45 runs before Uwins broke through Graham's defences for 13. Neither batsmen had been at their fluent best in the partnership adopting a policy of crease occupation; though Matt broke free later on to top-score with 52,which included 10 fours. Tosders, buoyed by his 73 last week with his new bat, made a breezy 25 off 36 balls and put on 51 with Matt. Danny O'Connell (42) and Andy Oliphant (19*) also put on 51 to see Sarisbury to a competitive total of 167 and showed a willingness to push for singles.

In reply, the Waterlooville batsmen seemed totally becalmed and at no stage threatened the Sarisbury target. It was as if they were content to accrue batting points, though they were missing a few batsmen. At 34-3 after 21 overs, victory was slipping away fast, though the Sarisbury bowlers, with the Mudeford debacle fresh in their minds, stuck to their game plan of bowling straight. Martin Lander (1-21 off 10 overs) was his usual metronomic self, while the change bowlers Steve Roberts (3-10 off 9 overs) and Ian Clark (2-14 off 8 overs) bowled miserly spells. If catches had been taken, Sarisbury would have bowled Waterlooville out, but both teams were guilty of dropping them. The margin of victory would have been greater than 38 runs had their number 9 not taken off the last over but it was still a satisfying win for Greg and the boys and one they had earmarked.

Report by Dan Scott(scorer).
