Match Report
Sarisbury thirds followed up last week's victory at Cowplain with a convincing 96 run win at home to Compton and Chandlers Ford seconds, a team 2 places above them at the start of play. Despite overnight rain, the wicket was quite lively and having been put in Sarisbury had only 62 runs on the board at the halfway stage with 4 wickets down with much to do to reach a competitive total. That they reached 167-7 was due mainly to Andy Oliphant's run-a-ball 85 ,which featured 10 fours and a six. In Ian Clark he found a partner willing to run quick singles and the pair put on 55 inside just 6 overs, scoring 42 off the last 3 overs of the innings. A great effort.
In reply, Compton and Chandlers Ford seconds were kept in check by the regular wickets of Ian Clark (6-18) and Steve Roberts (3-24). Ian's figures were the best this season in the thirds. It was only when the well-built South African all-rounder Stefan Neethling came to the wicket did the Sarisbury fielders scatter. He hit 16 off Danny O'Connell's first over but it was Danny who took his wicket later, tempting Neethling into an inelegant swipe which Greg hung onto gratefully. The adage that catches win matches certainly applied to this game as Greg, Andy Oliphant and Tosters all took stunning catches to lift morale and keep the opposition on the back foot. Compton and Chandlers Ford were all out after 25 overs to earn Sarisbury a most satisfying win, their second win at home this season.
