Match Report Saturday saw a surprising and exceptional win at Rowner for the 3rds with outstanding debuts by Steve Whitlam and Chris Spackman. Rowner are likely to end in the top 3 this season and have several players who could cut it at a higher level. Chris opened up from the Church End and bowled with hostility and no luck until Lyndon Strong wafted at a length ball and greg took the catch. After that as good a player as Jim Kemp played and missed at Chris about 10 times. There won't be many faster or better spells bowled in Reg 1 South this year. Robbo (1-20 off 10) and Senior then bored everyone as they do and Fras' tidy spell meant that after 30 overs Rowner were 68-3. However their Sri Lankan was all wristy flicks and brutal pulling and he got them up to 168-8. Senior finshed with 3 wickets, Chris 1, Robbo 1 with 3 run outs. The general view was that Rowner had got away with 20 too many runs and with Lyndon Strong bowling well (5-15) and Sarsibury 51-5 ( Greg 16) it seemed than we were playing just for bonus points. But Fras batting at 4 was still there though and looking the part as unknown quantity Steve Whitlam joined him. Sadly for the 3rds Steve will not stay unknown for very long! Steve and Fras put on a superb 70 run partnership. With Fras playing a mature second fiddle innnings and Steve hitting a string of high quality boundaries (Steve we don't do square drives and on drives in the thirds) and only going aerial if hitting a 6, we gradually took control. Fras then fell to the spinner for a high quality 47 and despite the loss of another quick wicket ; Senior and Steve in their very different ways got the 30 or so needed to get us home. The 3rds have put in some good performanes in the past 2 years; this was probably the best. Ian Clark |
