Match Report

The thirds' delightfully surprising season rolls on with a superb win at Curdridge.

Curdridge's awesome batting line up has already posted 340+ this season and chased contenders P&S's 2nds total of 194 total in 28 overs last week. So the thirds anticipated a tough stretch in the field. But it was not to be. Spackers soon had openers Pone and Cummins flashing and missing and fending off short of a length deliveries. Cummins in particular looked unsettled and dragged on a ball from Les having an uncharacteristically ugly swipe. In swaggered Proctor: the best bat in the division; jaunty sun hat, batting a metre outside his crease. Pone then had his off stump cartwheeled by a rapid Spackers outswinger. Proctor played and missed to Chris' first ball and soon after was beaten for pace and topped edged a pull that Greg snaffled and Curbrdidge were 12-3 with their top 3 bats gone for a combined total of 1 run.

Emms and Anthony then batted sensibly despite Chris' superb spell until the nagging Robbo had Emms caught well by Robbie C sprinting in from the deep. A reward too for Greg's inspired uncoventional field setting. The middle of the innings took a familiar pattern as Senior 1-25 and Robbo 2-18 throttled the innings. But Curdridge's middle order and tail played around the obdurate Anthony and despite another superb spell by Spackers who took 3 more wickets (5-30) and 2 oustanding slips catches by Charlie, Curdridge scraped their way to 126.

Proctor opened and bowled fast and Fras was soon out mishooking. Charlie went early too well caught low in the gully and at 20-2 it was game on again. Greg and Andy Ev then put together a 50 partnership , both playing some classy shots against a seriously testing attack. At 72-2 it seemed game over but then Evs and the chairman fell in quick succession and 50 runs seemed a long way away.

Greg edged Proctor behind, Tosders went for shot or bust and bust to deep mid on and 30 runs were needed with 4 wickets left.

The iceman carpenter was there though and saw out Procter's last over and started to play another mature innings mixing blocks and lofted drives. Unfortunately the silly old fools up the other end acted as if their trousers were on fire! However, small but significant partnerships followed with Senior (5), Les (4) and then Robbo (3). Robbo clipped a shot through square leg for 2 and scampered (or as near to scampered as Robbo can do) home to beat the throw from the deep to bring the scores level. Then in another twist was caught next ball at second slip.

And so to the last over with Carps facing, he blocked the first one and then drove sweetly for 4 over mid on and a vital 14*. A brilliant end to a brilliant game.

I would not be surprised if Curdridge win every other game they play this season. It says a lot for the depth of the club that our thirds can beat a team as good as Curdridge.

Over a cool lager Greg called this the best game the thirds had ever played in and the thirds' best ever win.

The p word is beginning to become realistic.
