Match Report Third team skipper Greg Horton is finally happy that relegation is not an issue. He started the season looking for 6 wins from somewhere: the team gave him no 6 yesterday by narrowly beating Bransgore at the Green. Bransgore won the toss and batted. Les opened up from the tennis court end with young Rob C coming in from the Church End. Bransgore made a steady start taking advantage of a few loose deliveries which they dispatched to the boundaries. Senior replaced Rob at the Church End before Les got the first wicket bowling their opener. Runs continued to come at a good rate until yours truly did their no 3 with a ripper that Warney would have been happy with. Sadly my bowling went downhill after that although I did get the no 5 with one that pitched at my feet and somehow he managed to lob it to Les at mid off. Robbo came on for an out of sorts Senior and immediatley stemmed the flow of runs helped by a good spell from Fraz it looked like we might get them out for around 160, sadly the other bowlers couldn't keep up the momentum and despite a three wicket hall for Rob C they reached 199 all out. Our best bowler once again was the evergreen Robbo; he got the dangerous opener out and only went for just under 3 an over. Teas were supplied by the Tosdevins and very warmly received by all. Greg gave us his usual "come on boys I fancy this with our strong batting line up" speech and off we went. Fraz went first up bowled by their young opener, Oz and Charlie put a small partnership together before Charlie edged one to slip. Greg went next playing on then Oz fell as well. Graham hit a few lusty blows before their opening spinner, who bowled his 10 straight through, decided to bowl seam for his last over. Graham bowled through the gate. Tosders out first ball. 78 for 6 became 85 for 7 when Rob was out C&B. All this time I was at the other end watching wickets fall and honestly thinking of an early finish and hopefully a not out for me. Senior changed all that! In a 9 over partnership we put on 46 running well with the odd boundary. When Senior was out we had about 130 and I was looking at 150 for another point. In walked Robbo promoted to no. 10 after last weeks run fest at the end of the innings. To explain what happened next as amazing is an understatement, their bowlers didn't seem to realise Robbo is a one shot man the quicker and shorter they bowled the more he pulled them to the boundary. I think they were getting a bit upset at this stage not helped by me laughing at Robbo from the non-striker's end. We put on nearly 50 in quick time, me playing the anchor role Robbo scoring 27: it's still making me smile now. Sadly their young opener finally pitched one up and Robbo was done LBW. Les walked to the crease with 20 needed in 2 and a bit overs no problem. We both managed a couple of boundaries and found ourselves needing 5 off the last over. I did the obvious thing being the senior batsman and scored a single off the first ball leaving Les to do the rest he sort of defended 2 deliveries so I had a quiet word and he promptly smashed the next one for four back over the bowler's head. Game over with 2 balls to spare. I ended on 57 not out the last three wickets got 120 runs and we are back at the top of the league, thoughts of relegation long gone. Blacky gave up his chance to play today so that we had an umpire, he did a great job. Big thanks to Sandra for scoring. Some of the details in this report might not be totally accurate as I have a major hangover this morning, I'm sure Mo puts something extra in his Cobra!! Andy O. |
