Match Report

Firstly can i say i dont normally do the reports but i'll give it a go...

Today we travelled to Portsmouth and Southsea in the pouring rain. As we drove down the motorway, we could see lightning in the distance, waiting for a call from Mike saying it's off any second!

When we arrived we had to wait about 15 minutes for the drizzle to ease off. P and S opened the batting as the sun started to come out (shocked). Dom and I opened the bowling, with me picking up the first wicket only 3 overs into the game, a good catch by Fletcher in the slips. Dom and I bowled the first 11 overs them finishing with about 50-1. Doms figures finishing 6 overs 35 runs for no wickets, unlucky not to pick up a few. As the rain started again, Alex Hammond and Luke Bristowe started their overs. Alex Hammond finished with great figures of 12 overs 42 runs for 2 wickets, 1 catch (Lander) and 1 clean bowled. His spell was interupted by rain however forcing us to have an early tea. As we entered the field again Both Jamie Fletcher and Rob Gibbens had a bowl at the other end, both bowling very tightly, Fletcher ending with figures of 4 overs 17 for no wickets, and Rob pickin up the key wicket of R Prittipaul for 91 trapped lbw. In dangerous conditions Rob and I finished off the bowling off a 2 pace run up. I picked up one wicket at the death, bowled, finishing with figures of 8 overs 15 runs for 2 wickets. P and S reached the score of 162 off of their 40 overs.

Just as our openers, Tim Cooper and Stuart Raddon reached the crease, the sun came out and things quickly dryed up. This didn't prevent their opening bowler only managing one ball from his first over, turning his ankle as he slid on the wet pitch on his delivery stride for the second; the over being completed by the first change bowler Ward. A couple of trips to the DIY store for sawdust were needed to complete the match. We started off well and our openers managed to stay in for the first 15-20 overs, batting well and looking solid. Tim Cooper then took a faint edge to keeper off a slow offspinner, our first wicket down. Then Alex Hammond came to the crease and made an impact straight away, hitting multiple boundaries, being well supported by Raddon at the other end. Unfortunately, Alex was then bowled, for a quick 25. Fletcher then came to the crease and started to build a parntership with Raddon, taking our score to 100 off about 30 overs. Unfortunately, Raddon was then caught for a well played 33, the core of our innings. Our middle order then failed to perform, with Carpenter playing himself in, then to lob one straight back to the offspinner's grateful hands. Wickets started to fall at a quicker rate, losing Mike Garner, run out for 2, and Fletcher bowled, again by the offspinner, Ward. Luke Bristowe scored 3 before being bowled by a young south east bowler (the opener with the turned ankle was back). Rob Gibbens was our only batsman able to stick around for abit, as Lander and D Hammond were both out cheaply and quickly. Mikey Cooper defended his wicket, getting a not-out in his 4th team debut. We were bowled out for 118, 44 short of the P and S target. Our team bowled very well and look promising for the future. We then drove home ( all uninjured luckily) to have a good dry off!!
