Match Report

Well it was the first Saturday in July, the sun was shining and it looked like the perfect day to finally get some cricket played. The opposition was Bedhampton 3rds and we were playing at Fishbourne. The ground looked perfect (the pitch was articificial), albeit the grass was rather long.

The team showed a few changes. Notable newcomers were the two Grahams (Flower & Saunders) and Alex Hammond was making his last appearance for a while. Mike lost the toss and we were put into bat (nice work skipper!).

Graham F & Stuart opened, and it is fair to say that they scratched around a bit for runs. Boundaries were hard to come by, unless you hit over the long grass, and the Bedhampton opening bowlers were naggingly accurate. Extras were generous, easily high scoring in an opening partnership of 50 that took the best part of 20 overs. If I were to be critical of our guys, we could have pushed some runs as their fielders were set a way back. Graham dug in, and although clearly not batting his best, didn't give his wicket up. Stuart was first out, with the score at 55, scoring 13.

What happened next turned the game in our favour. Matt Reeves came to the crease and was positive from the word go. He ran singles hard, he hit the bad ball to the boundary and lifted the game by the scruff of the neck. His approach helped Graham to lift his game. Matt entered his forties with a six and quickly reached his 50 with a fine 4 through mid wicket. A fine first league 50 for Matt! Matt pushed on and reached 59 before tiring and being stumped having put on 90 with Graham. Yours truly played a small cameo (including a six) before playing too early and skying a catch. Alex bludgeoned a couple of 4s & 6s to take the total towards 200 before being bowled for 26. Graham reached his 50 in around the 38th over. He was bowled next ball, but had done a great job in sticking it out when the going was tough. Hannah, Graham (S) and Derek all sacrificed their wickets in the run chase as we reached a respectable 217 for 8.

The Bedhampton innings started in much the same way as ours. Runs were very hard to come by, and Martin & Dom both bowled extremely well. Dom was probably my pick as the best bowler, but we expect a lot of Martin these days, and we tend to notice when he bowls a bad ball. The first change came in the 11th over when Matt Reeves replaced Martin. Guess what? You can't keep a good man down and he immediately broke through to remove an opener with the score at around 20 off 11 overs.

Bedhampton found it hard to get any of our bowlers away. Matt & Alex bowled tidily, and Alex bowled medium & spin to mix things up. An injury to Hannah's finger (hope you ok H?) led to the old git taking the gloves. Alex removed two more as Bedhampton continued to struggle. Disappointingly they never really chased our total once they realised that they couldn't get easy runs. Derek bowled a couple of slow overs to mix things up, and then Martin returned to bag a couple of wickets. Dom returned and removed the Bedhampton opener shortly after he reached his 50 in about the 40th over. We managed to prevent Bedhampton getting a further batting point and they closed their innings on around 120 for 6. A comfortable win by around 100 runs.

Dom finished with figures of 1 for 14 in 9 overs. Martin 2 for 20 odd in 10. Alex got 2 for 40ish in 10.

A good team display and it was great that the two Graham's fitted in so well, and it is great fun with this group of guys.

Mark's man of the match: Matt Reeves for a match winning first league 50 and for his all round performance.

One comment on Matt though - get those whites white! I have never seen a greener coloured shirt & trouser before. We'll have to introduce a dress code next week!

Mark Hansford
