Match Report

A splendid victory over Portsmouth Community really didn't look likely for most of the afternoon. With the 1st team game off, Rob Cooper stepped down to replace his brother Tim, who was unwell. Rob opened with Colin Billson and scoring proved very difficult on a soft, low pitch. After 13 overs, we were 18 for 1 with Colin gone for 1. Skipper, Mike Garner struggled likewise but Rob tried valiantly to accelerate things and was caught for a fighting 44. Stuart Bruce now came to the crease determined not to be tied down. His 10 runs came off 10 deliveries and when he departed LBW the score was in 3 figures but still not very convincing. When Skipper Mike was run out for a fighting 24 we had two youngsters at the crease in Fraser Moon and Dominic Hammond and frankly these two picked the innings up by the scruff of the neck! Fraser hit 3 very classy looking boundaries whereas Dominic confined himself to ones and twos, but both young men ran between the wickets quite brilliantly and refused to be tied down. The fielding side visibly wilted under this assault which was worth over 50 runs and left Sarisbury with a total of 160 for 5. One critical comment. If only 5 wickets were down after 42 overs maybe we did take too few chances early in the innings.

Portsmouth Community's innings went in three phases. Phase one, Sarisbury were on top as Martin Lander and Dominic Hammond bowled superbly and had the opposition at 17 for 2 off 10 overs. Phase two however, saw things change as the change bowlers failed to settle and both went for 7 an over and had to come off. The game was in the balance, Portsmouth were 98 for 4 off 23 overs with Randall on 59 not out. Enter Derek Bruce! The demon spinner simply served up a mixture of good deliveries which the batsmen treated with respect, and long hops which they hit down the fielders throats! With the two young openers operating from one end, Derek completely bamboozling from the other and some superb catching going on all round, Community just committed suicide and were all out 24 runs short. Derek clean bowled his last 3 victims, one of them yorked on the second bounce, but 7.2 overs, 6 for 14 speaks for itself! Finally a word about the Ruff contribution. 4 superb catches, 2 each for Harriet and Ed played a vital part in this unlikely win. Well done also to the skipper for keeping things together during the crisis period.
