Match Report

The fourths got their season underway with an opening fixture away to Rowner 2nds. This was the reverse of last seasons opener which was narrowly lost. We played by the Green Dragon pub in Rowner for those who know the area. Rowner are one of the more useful sides in this league with a blend of experience and youth. The wicket looked flat and firm, much better than most of us expected.

Mike won the toss and decided to bat, the first of a series of good (or lucky!) decisions from the skipper. Myself and Stuart opened, and began steadily as the temperature rose. Rowner opened the bowling with a mixture of youth and experience, and we saw off the young opener and took around 35 off the first 10 overs with only one or two hairy moments. We set out to see it to 15 overs, then 20 and so on. I started to score a little more freely after the first change, and took the lead runs wise as we put on 50. Stuart was Bowled (?) shortly after 50 having scored a solid 13 or so, and I was joined by Fraser Moon (promoted in the order). Fraser played well and listened to my words of wisdom and we put on another 30 or 40 through drinks. My fifty came up during this stand but I didn.t notice the ripple of applause (how.s that for concentration!). Fraser fell with the score around 90 to a sharp catch at silly mid off . he got around 12(?). I was joined by the other Fraser (Tait) who again batted intelligently and we continued our serene progress over 100 towards 150, with the run rate getting up to around 5 an over. I lost Fraser around 150, sorry can.t remember how? Young Adam Bailey joined me and although very tired I was conscious I must have been getting towards a ton. to be honest I was knackered! I was out LBW (4th wicket down) with the score around 160 playing and missing a tired shot towards midwicket. 97. a little gutted, but I think it will come this year - been watching Olly Senior's approach. you are never too old to learn from others.

The innings continued steadily with some lusty blows from debutant Mark Callow (caught in the deep) and some good runs late in the innings from Adam & Martin Lander seeing us through to 211 for 5 (I think?). This was a half decent total from the batters, although I think the skipper would have liked 20 to 25 runs more.

The Rowner openers started briskly, scoring freely off of Martin & Fraser M. Martin was a little short and full at times which was brutally punished by the openers. In the 5th over Martin got one to nip back in late and bowled the opener with the score near to 30. Martin was much more his accurate self for the remainder of his spell as some of the early sting was taken out of Rowner. First change saw Mark Callow make his bowling bow. a wee bit stuttering as he struggled with his run up. The skipper agreed his request to change ends (ultimately a great decision) via an over from Graham S. In his next over Mark removed the other opener (caught) and in his spell of 6 overs he took another two wickets, and there was also a run out. At drinks Rowner were 70 odd for 5. Fraser T and Adam Bailey both bowled tidily, Adam taking a wicket in his short spell. Young Olli Challis bowled an excellent 4 overs and another bowling change bringing on Rob Carpenter saw the 7th wicket down. Mark Callow came back on and removed wicket number 8 and Rowner.s number 10 came to the crease with the score around 120 for 8 and 90 required from about 13 overs. To be fair he had a right go. He lost his first partner with around 10 overs and 65 runs remaining (Martin got him I think!) and then single-handedly assaulted the bowling. he started to pick Mark C.s line & length and the total raced on a further 25 to 30 runs in 3 overs. Squeaky bottom time! With 32 stillrequired from 6 overs Mark C capped a fine debut (five for) by tempting the number 11 to hole out to Fraser at Mid off. Number 10 was left on 40 not out at the non strikers end.

A good win for the opening game and more positives than negatives. Hopefully this signals the start of a successful season for the 4ths. There is a lot of good young talent in the club and I felt the blend of youth and experience on Saturday was spot on. Roll on the rest of the year!

Cheers,

Mark H
