Match Report

4ths go down in thrilling encounter to Portsmouth Community at Whiteley.

On a very windy day Portsmouth won the toss and decided to bat.

Mike opened up with Dr Mike (to be now known as Dr Jeckyll and Mr Hyde) and Richard Azar. Rumours that Richard is the skipper's love child have proved so far unfounded!!!

With the wind behind him Mr Hyde roared in and unsettled the Porstmouth Batsmen as well as Hannah keeping wicket and at times the middle of the pitch too!!!

Richard however running into the wind found it difficult to put constant pressure on the openers with the odd release ball and some mighty blows by the batters keeping Richard for the 12 overs he bowled straight off wicket less. He did beat the bat on occassions and there were some airy fairy shots but never the less 12 overs straight off was suprising.

Dr Hyde got the first wicket in the 7th over with the ball keeping a bit low and what really did the batter was it was straight!!!!

The Portsmouth Skipper who was their opener started to open up against Richard and after 7 overs of Dr Hyde 1-27 was replaced by Mark Callow.

Immediately Mark bowled a good line and his reward with a wicket in his first over. His next wicket arrived in similar fashion in the 21st over and Portsmouth were on 82-3. Poor old Richard after running into the wind for 12 overs was replaced by Ollie (Gooders when I appeal they are always out) Challis!!!

In his first over The Chairman took a brilliant catch to dismiss the dangerous number 5 bat who only 2 weeks before destroyed a side with a ton. In the next over Mark got the last of his wickets (in between time we had a stoppage for Marks injured hand, poor guy, Robby offered to stitch it as Mark had a cut, well we think it was a cut, it was either that or his hand needed major surgery, or so Mark thought!!!!) and so from 109-3 off 25 overs Portsmouth were 109-5 with all the dangerous bats gone. Their skipper made a good 50.

Ollie twirled away from the wind against end didn't get another wicket but did bowl a decent line and length mostly, I can think of only 1 over that he lost his length and got punished.

Meanwhile Dr Jeckyll showed up and was asked to finish his allotted overs, he had 5 left and in that spell he took 5 more wickets for just 4 runs. By bowling the right lines and hardly any half trackers he got a C AND B and bowled the other 3. (I should have guessed we were in for a unique cricket match after Dr Jeckyll bowled the last ball of his final over he turned round to me and pleaded with me to call it a wide!!!!!) This left Portsmouth perilously on 128-9 but as it turned out the last pair at the crease put on 19 crucial and match winning runs before Mark got his 4th wicket.

In the field it was good to see the youngsters running around and the ground fielding is not the worst in the club (eh Greg!!) Hannah behind the stumps who started off shakily especially considering the peppering Mr Hyde gave but by the end showed good glove work standing up to Mark, and Ollie.

At tea the game was too close to call and to hunt down this total Sarisbury needed a decent start.

Did they get it did they heck!! The Chairman opened up with the out of sorts Stuart and in the 4ths over Stuart was bowled by the spinner: 9-1.

In strolled Harold the bowler but today was a batter and he went in the next over for 0: 10-2. In came Mike's love child, ooops I mean Richard at no 4 and between Richard and Robby they steadied the ship. Richard was the next to go and after scoring 17 runs he was out in the 19th over with the score on 59-3. Richard was very tired by this stage!!!

In next was young Jordan, and 1 of the reasons I was umpiring was I wanted to see the young-uns however Jordan disappointed I think he faced 3/4 deliveries before being bowled for 0. Now it wasn't the fact Jordan got 0 it was how he approached his innings, he never attempted to get used to the pitch and settle in, no he went on the attack from ball 1 and missing most of them to boot. So at 59-4 Sarisbury were back in the mire again. What Robby needed was someone to stay with him and build partnerships. Next in stepped Hannah and I must say Hannah played the most delightful innings, Her ability to judge runs were exemplary, her defence solid and her shot selection was very good. These 2 put on 49 for the next wicket and at 108 Robby's luck was finally over as he played an ugly shot to an even uglier delivery. However in his innings Robby played some lovely aggressive shots through cow corner and over extra cover but the best was a massive straight hit 6 that just kept going and going.

So at 108-5 the game was in the balance again. 40 needed off 12 overs. Young Tom came in next and was bowled 3rd ball but although he didnt score and was soon out you can see that Young Tom looks to have a good technique which we as a club will need to help him develop.

Richard's dad came in next (aka the skipper) and over the next 8 overs ran well picking up singles etc and their sensible batting looked to put us with a great chance of winning.

With 12 needed of 4 overs and 4 wickets left disaster struck. Hannah who played superbly for 22 was caught playing a cover drive, to a juggling catch. In came Dr Mike and then with the score on 141 the skipper was out bowled trying to force the issue to a good straight ball. Out strode Mark Callow and with 2 overs left 2 wickets left 7 was needed.

Dr Mike was facing and the first 4 balls went by without any further score then Mike smashed 1 over the top for 4, 3 needed, However of the last ball of the over Dr Mike tried again and was caught, Mr Hyde then reappered again and threw his bat in disgust as he was running to the bowlers end and the Umpire (i.e. me) had to take evasive action!!! Afterwards Dr Jeckyll said it slipped out of his hand, mmmmmnnnnnnnhuh!

In came young Ollie to face the last over 3 needed, the tension was high and the first 3 balls Ollie tried to force it but had no or little connection then on the 4th ball of the final over Ollie connected however it looped up to Portsmouth Skipper at he took the catch and Portsmouth won by 2 runs.

A very good game and congratulations to Portsmouth for their victory and bad luck Sarisbury great effort.

Gooders
