Match Report

On a sunny afternoon down at Privett Park the 4ths played for the second time this year. That is about as good as the game got.

Stuck in by the opposition, Sarisbury were on the back foot following the second ball dismissal of skipper Mark Hansford. Wickets continued to fall at regular intervals with 7 being a score a few batsmen scratched around for until being dismissed. Only 2 players managed double figures, Stu Raddon with a patient 12 and Will Jacobs with a very useful 17 from number 10. In fact, if i'm honest, the way Will and Mike Brogan batted for the last wicket, they looked like our opening pair. So 92 all out from nearly 40 overs showed what a poor effort had been made and left the bowlers with not much to defend.

After a maiden from Mike Edwards, Will Jacobs continued to showcase his talent by bowling one of the openers with his third ball. With the other opener then being bowled in Mike's next over we had a chance with Gosport 5 for 2. A difficult chance was spilled at slip off Edwards from their big number four and then the game was taken away from us by a rapid 3rd wicket partnership with shots being flayed to all parts of the ground. Mike Edwards grabbed another 2 wickets towards the end to finish with 3 for 33 but Gosport completed the win inside 14 overs when an overthrow from a dropped catch off Callow, 0 for 4 off 2.2 overs, went for the winning 2 runs.

All in all the day was a disaster with the exception of Will Jacobs, and Mike Brogan did not even get to bowl. Teams like Gosport in this league are showing a vast improvement from last season, however, we are not and promotion looks a million miles away at this point.

Unless we adopt a rather more bullish attitude to our cricket and look to push singles hard and take risks with the bat more often, beatings like the 3 handed out in the last 3 weeks will be repeated. For someone who has come out of retirement to help out the last 2 weeks have been very disappointing as we seem to have no fight in the team when situations get tough, this is in contrast to last season when we always scrapped and got some close wins because of it. Hoping the performance next week away to table topping Vospers will improve.

Mark Callow
