Match Report

At 2pm in sweltering heat the eagerly anticipated grudge match between Sarisbury and the Presidents team started. Grudge match is because of the appalling way Sarisbury conned their way to victory over the Presidents team last year.

It is still too painful for many of the Presidents side that day to talk about what happened but suffice to say over a beer or 3 I will regale those who want to know any Saturday evening at the hollow.

Anyway onto this year's game and the Presidents skipper Commander Forer won the most important test of his entire career by winning the toss and electing to bat.

The presidents side got off to a bad start losing two early wickets Sarisbury opened up with Young Tom who was playing his 9th game in 9 days having played for the under 15's earlier on. Tom struggled and was very tired but he did manage to get out though a very very good bat from Havant who if he had stayed at the crease for longer would have smashed the ball all around the ground. Young Tom got his man and retired to the outfield for the remainder of the innings having bowled 4 overs.

Lester was joined by Graham Flower and they consolidated the innings putting on over 80 for the 3rd wicket. Young Graham had been struggling with the bat recently but after some fantastic coaching by the Umpire Saturday Night and said Umpire telling Lester as well, Lester helped Graham get back into form with some sound technical batting. Graham may only have scored 23 but the longer he spent at the crease the better his touch was and the slight flaw he had developed seems to be behind him which is excellent news. Lester at the other end played an innings that young Matt Reeves should study. Lester played himself in and rather than look for big blows he got Graham running well between the wicket to pick up their ones and twos. Lester did not need to nor did he take any chances. And then when he felt the time was right he started to open up and play the more expansive shots. Matt look and learn!!

Lester was the first to go making 58 when he was adjudged LBW playing one to many shots through the leg side, or in this case missing playing a shot through the leg side.

Graham was next out caught at Long on trying to up the tempo against Keith. Graham at last got out trying to play in the right manner and his positiveness was so good to see. No slogging/cross batting at all which shows you can score runs by showing the full face of the bat to the ball.

James Ingram on return to his spiritual home came in next and smashed a typically agreesive 31 young Chris Oliphant came in and didn't hang around out cheaply, but this was down to their being few overs left and time for niceties had long gone.

Dom and Geoff finished the innings off with Dom hitting 32 not out but and in the context of the game it was a big but, Dom's reluctance to run twos in those final overs were to prove the Presidents undoing.

The Presidents side finished on 202 which on reflection was about par for the course although 240 would have been a more testing target for the Sarisbury boys.

Rob Carpenter bowled well taking 1-30 and Keith despite one expensive over bowled really well getting turn and bounce in figures of 2-39

After Tea Sarisbury opened with Phil and Sam and they started slowly but confidently, Sam did look a bit nervous especially against the pace of our flame haired quickie Robbo, Sam made sure he never got his pads in the way of the swinging ball. James opened up from the pavillion end and bowled with hostile pace on a slowish wicket and neither opener looked that settled.

The bookies had closed the book on how Sam would get out and against whom but they made a fortune because although Robbo got his bunny it was not in the expected way, Sam got out driving a ball to Mid off where a good catch was taken.

Matt Reeves came out next and despite some verbals by Dom held off the agressive Ingram before falling to a slower one bowled. Phil at this point was joined by Matt who it has to be said resembles a young Bayliss in so far as he played a delighful knock after downing the odd beer or three ;-)

Despite some astute captaincy by the flawless Commander, no bowler could make a break through with both Phil and Matt punishing any loose deliveries. Dom in particular ended up with disappointing figures of 0-60 off of 7 overs. The heat then got to Dave umpiring and he had to retire to the bar for a few beers, Dave is no idiot ;-) The umpiring was continued with our President taking over from Dave.

With Sarisbury closing in on victory needing only 60 to win off 12 overs with 8 wickets in hand Commander made the decision to bring back his strike bowler in an effort to dislodge this partnership. James did not disappoint having Phil out LBW for 41. The ball would have knocked over all 3 stumps and as afterwards discussed in the bar where the ball pitched though was hotly debated.

The chairman came out next and with some mad running and lusty blows helped Matt put on 35 quick runs before he was out to what can only be desribed as a once in a lifetime event ;-)

Geoff Edwards who was bowling some decent spin got absolutely drilled by Robby with the ball winging its way to Long Off like an excocet missile when Robbo sprang like a gazelle and took a blinding catch.

Well everyone rolled about laughing, Robbo looked even redder with surprise at taking the breathless catch, the only one who was spitting feathers was our Chairman who could be heard mumbling all the way to the pavillion in utter disbelief ;-) Reports circulating afterwards that our Chairman was last seen in a phone box calling the Samaritans cannot be vouched for ;-)

Anyway Squidge came out next and although he hasn't batted for weeks he and Matt eased any fears by running hard and getting to the end of the penutlimate over tied.

So the Skipper had a cunning plan helped by the Umpire, the skipper would bowl the last over and first ball Matt came down the wicket missed and was stumped by graham. I say stumped because the Umpire at the bowlers end had given it out :D however Mr President at the non bowlers end did what ALL umpires do he gave his HONEST decision and not out was the reply.

The next ball was bowled wider and Matt left it and then 3rd ball on the advice of umpire bowled his off spin delivery toward Gully only for Matt to run out and smash it for 4 to win the game for Sarisbury again in the last over.

Congratulations to Matt and Phil and then Simon for not getting their pads in the way of the bowling.

Excellent game well done lads.

Gooders
