Match Report

Sarisbury thirds began their season with a morale-boosting 6 wicket win over Compton in a friendly on Saturday in the heart of idyllic Sussex countryside.

Compton, having won the toss and batted, put 44 on for the first wicket at a run a ball before being pegged back by 3 Craig Raddon wickets. Sarisbury's veteran seamer Richard Azar, playing his first match for the club since 1998 I believe, restored a measure of control with exceptional figures of 8 overs, 5 maidens, 2 wickets for 9 runs. He was ably supported by Fraser Moon(2-16), who bowled a gutsy spell up-hill and Tom Clark(2-3). Special mention has to be made of the standard of the catches with Craig Raddon's one at full stretch on the boundary the pick of the bunch. The Sarisbury fielders commitment in the field led to painful encounters with a barbed wire fence. Ouch. Sarisbury managed to bowl Compton out inside 32 overs for 143. A great effort.

With experienced batsmen of the calibre of Andy Oliphant and Paul Tosdevin absent and the pitch offering variable bounce, the game was still in the balance at tea. However,Sarisbury's younger batsmen came to the fore. Graham Flower(28) and Matt Reeves (13) were 4 balls short of seeing off the first 10 overs and later Tom Clark(54*) and Fraser Moon(30) put on a match winning stand of 66 to cap fine all-round performances. The pair faced 139 balls and batted with sense and skill. Hopefully we haven't peaked too soon.
