Match Report
Played at 'The Hollow' on a very hot and sunny day Hedge End won the toss and not surprisingly chose to bat in this 40 overs, 8 per bowler match.
Our two opening bowlers, Tom Clark and Rob Carpenter, started steadily with Tom taking the first wicket in the 7th over, removing one of Hedge End's most dangerous looking batsman, a wicket maiden in fact! As in previous weeks the bowlers had 4 over spells, Colin Day and George Kimber-Sweatman, they contained the batsmen well, with young George picking up his first of four wickets, Derek Bruce taking a comfortable catch at Gully. So, at the first drinks break after 15 overs Hedge End were on 57 for 2. With Ed Ruff joining our bowling attack three more wickets fell, Ed with 2, one LBW and a well judged catch by Colin Day on the boundary, Rob clean bowled another batsman in a wicket maiden. After 30 overs, the next drinks break, Hedge End had moved on to 93 for 5. With 10 overs remaining and 5 wickets left, Hedge End decided to try and increase their run rate, they did so with some success, but the wickets fell steadily as well, with George also ending up with 4 wickets, two good catches were taken by Derek, again at Gully, and Rob at Cover. Hedge End's final score was 176 all out with 1.3 overs remaining, a respectable total that needed some sensible, and not rushed, batting to beat.
After tea Ian Stewart and myself set about the task of overhauling Hedge End's total, we started well with a good run rate, I was the first to go bowled for 23 in the 13th over with the score on 84. Sam Freemantle (22) quickly pushed the score along with 4 boundaries, he went in the 16th over, total 122.By this time Ian Stewart, too, was scoring freely with 12 fours, 1 five, and a six, in a excellent knock of 76, a personal best for Ian. The dependable Tom Clark (11 not out) saw us home with Ed scoring the winning run, a long awaited and deserved win for us by 4 wickets, a great effort by all!
