Match Report

Neil lost the toss and they asked us to bat!!!!!!! I think they were hoping they would turn us over as they did last year!!!! Wrong - Lester and Pete put on a hundred opening partnership and Matty J also got a 50 with Lester carrying his bat through The whole 48 overs and scoring his 1st Ton for Sarisbury.

Neil looked good until he was run out by a direct hit - not a happy bunny and his response to the fielders subsequent performance was not repeatable. With a score of 268 posted P&S started off with attack in mind scoring at 5 an over until NG got the first wicket and from then on we were on top. Four more victims for Neil and the rest shared between Joe, Keith and Danny O. Although Pete thought Keith bowled a little short - how's the head Pete.

So P&S all out for only 45 let's follow this up with a win against Portchy next week.

Another match report!

Neil lost the toss and we were asked to bat by the Portsmouth & Southsea captain, probably because of the forecast of rain showers. To say that was the last thing they won, on the day, would be an understatement.

Lester and Pete Hammond opened and we all settled down to watch some great batting. The wicket was a bit up and down with one over by the P&S opening bowler getting several balls keeping low then for one to rear up at Pete's throat. The one thing that was excellent was that any bad ball was dispatched for four by both batsmen. Pete was the more aggressive of the openers and was first to reach his fifty. The opening partnership was finally broken by their overseas player, who bowled Pete (61) with a yorker, the score being 109.

Neil was next in and didn't take long to get off the mark and was starting to time the ball beautifully, which ultimately was his down fall. He hit a sweetly timed shot to mid off and went for a single only for the fielder to pick up cleanly and throws down the stumps, great piece of fielding. Meanwhile Lester by this time had got his fifty, was quietly accumulating runs taking the singles and hit the bad balls for four, obviously learning from last week and not hitting the ball in the air.

Matt Journeaux was next in and started very calmly getting used to the pace of the wicket and just pushing ones and twos off the two spinners that P&S used in tandem. Once they had bowled their spells the quicker bowlers returned, which suited Matt who accelerated with some fiercely struck fours all around the park. During this partnership Lester appeared happy to give Matt the strike, where some batsmen would.ve been farming it for themselves. At one stage there was talk of how long it was going to take for Matt to overtake Lester but then he got one that kept a little low and was bowled for 51.

Next to bat was Paul Friedrich and with only a handful of overs to go it was about getting over the 250 and maximum batting points. This time it was Lester to be the aggressor in the partnership and also to bring up his hundred. There were some great shots including a reverse sweep for a couple and a slog sweep off their opening bowler. We finished on 268 for 3 which was a great score considering it wouldn't be the easiest of wickets to bat on this season.

Our turn with the ball and we had to improve on last week's efforts, but at least we had the runs this time. Joe Humby opened and was putting the ball in the right areas from the start. Neil took the second over and likewise was on the button. Joe's next over saw their opener going for a big drive only to get a thick edge flew to backward point where Pete Hammond had a diving attempt but just couldn't cling onto it, but at least saved four runs. That chance didn't cost us because Neil got him in the next over, he played on, and so begun the turning of the screw. The bowling was right on the spot and dot ball after dot ball and the pressure started to build on the batting side and with that pressure so the wickets fell. There were no fantastic one handed catches, it was just top class bowling. Joe, 8 overs 2 for 21, gave way to Keith Hammond (the only bowler to come out with some credit last week) and still the wickets kept falling, finishing with 2 for 7 off 3 overs. Neil finally ended his spell, 10 overs 5 for 10 and Danny O'Connell took over only needing 5 balls on a turning wicket to take the last wicket caught at forward short leg.

We had bowled Portsmouth & Southsea out for 45 and winning by 223 runs great all-round performance let's hope we can keep it up.

Danny O'Connell
