Match Report

Neil lost the toss and we were asked to field by the Portchester captain.

Things started well with Joe getting their opener caught at mid off by Neil in his first over and things got even better when Neil had their No 3 caught at 2nd slip by Lester in his first over. Portchester then put on 80 before for the next wicket with some strong boundary hitting before Pete Hammond bowled their overseas play in the 20th over. At this time both the Hammond brothers where bowling and Keith soon got into the act with probably the easiest caught and bowled of his life. In fact he was so confident he was celebrating the catch before it had arrived, I'm so glad he didn't drop it ;-) We then had another 10 overs before our next success when Freddy managed to pick up two wickets in his first over getting their opener out, caught at mid on by Matt Journeaux, then getting their No 7 LBW. In Keith's last over he got his second wicket to finish with excellent figures of 2 for 26 off 12 overs. Their No 10 came in and hit some lusty blows, I'd like to call them pretty but they were effective, until Neil removed his off stump bail and then got the last batsman out the very next ball. Generally our fielding was tidy but we did drop a couple for chances one resulting in Phil Journeaux splitting his thumb open (ouch).

So came the reply, which started promisingly until Pete was well caught in the slips off the opening bowler. Simon was batting at No 3 this week and played some nice shots and looked comfortable until he tried flicking across the line and was given out LBW. Unfortunately wickets started to fall at regular intervals and although we had loads of overs left to some good bowling and indifferent shots. Lester top scored for us with 30 but we needed one of our other front line batters to make a significant contribution but it didn't happen. Rob Cooper fought to the very end remaining not out and Joe hit a quick fire 18 but it was just not enough.

So to summarise we needed to chase down 174 but could only manage 138 but the most disappointing thing is we still had more than 8 overs to bat.
