Match Report

After the lack of decent opposition at Waterlooville the boys were hoping for a decent game when Hungerford visited the hollow. Alas they were hardly any better than 'Ville and having chosen to bat first on a damp and difficult pitch, were quite unable to cope with the quality of Neil's bowling. Though Joe served up his usual mixture of wides and jaffas, the opening bowlers reduced the visitors to 39 for 5 fairly quickly. The two Hammonds then came on with Pete, initially, very tight and unlucky not to get a wicket, whilst Keith was hit for a couple of boundaries but took 2 wickets in 3 overs! They then reversed role as Pete went for a few runs and was relieved by Fred. Keith was disciplined but no one was prepared to attack him. Hungerford tried to drag things back taking things from 69 for 7 up to 103 while Fred patiently probed and Keith tried a few too many experiments to break the deadlock. Finally Fred broke the partnership and almost immediately snapped up top scorer Houghton(41) and then wrapped up the innings to finish with 3 for 5!

A target of 109 was not going to challenge us much though initially the openers were cautious. Lester relaxed first and started to reach the boundary, then Pete after a very disciplined start, joined in with some good drives. Inevitably, Pete's first loose shot was his last as he was caught behind by a spectacular dive from the keeper who had been struggling up till then to even stop the ball. Andy Evs was bowled fairly quickly and maybe a few hearts fluttered for a moment, but Matt was equal to the challenge and he and Lester brought us home safely for another 23 points. The other results meant that the division is still up for grabs and Sarisbury are now in 5th place!
