Match Report

Against Alton 2nds at the Hollow.

The start was delayed by 30 minutes due to a shower of rain just before the start time of 1.30pm. The result was the game was reduced to 43 overs per side.

Neil went the way of most Captains for the club this year and lost the toss and was promptly asked to bat first by the Alton Skipper.

So much discussion has taken place recently about improving the professionalism of the club, better training, etc etc perhaps all 4 Captains need to have training in tossing!!!!!!!!

Lester and Pete opened the batting and against steady if not spectacular bowling made a cautious start.

Lester was very watchful early on and Pete after awhile tried to add impetus to the innings, on a couple of occassions Pete was fortunate to get away with a couple of extra cover drives which went aerial without going to hand. However, that said this did seem to spur Pete on and he began to relax and play some delightful shots, I particuarly liked the back foot drives which does show the class of the batter.

After the opening bowlers Alton brought on a left arm slow bowler and an off spinner from my end.

Both Lester and Pete batted with responsibility and both continued to play a thoughtful knock. The off spinner in particular was bowling well getting both turn and bounce.

The opening stand went past 100 and Lester and Pete were communicating well running hard for the 1's and 2's, Pete got to his 50 first and I also liked the fact that Pete did not go crazy thereafter but played with purpose and composure.

On 120 odd we lost the first wicket when Pete was trapped LBW to the off spinner trying to work him off his legs on the back foot. Apologies Pete for me giving the decision!!!!

At this stage we had about 13 overs left with 9 wickets in hand. Andy Evans came out next never really got going he was stumped advancing down the wicket to the off spinner who got 1 to turn and bounce on Andy.

Matt came out next and he showed how to run quick runs before he and Lester got in a mix up and Matt was run out.

Neil came out next and Lester who passed his 50 and was begining to open up with only half a dozen overs to go was also trapped LBW for 80 odd. Luckily it was not me who gave the decision this time!!!

The score was about 170-4 when Freddy joined the skipper and they ran well between the wickets and managed to get the score up to 230 with Freddy scoring 20 odd before being caught with 1 ball to go and Neil running himself out on the last ball having made 30 odd.

Alton brought back 1 of their opening bowlers at the end of the innings and changed the left arm spinner for another off spinner, but they did not manage to slow down the run rate, due to professional batting and the really important fact that Sarisbury had plenty of wickets in hand when the final 10 overs were started.

At tea time the team was pleased with the performance and I think they all recognised that the wonderful start Pete and Lester gave the side was the solid foundation for the respectful total made.

Neil opened up with Joe and Matt, Joe bowled from my end and in his first three overs with the new ball was getting the ball to move around but he got no luck with decisions!???!???

Matt who was moving the ball away from the Right handers in between bowling no balls got the first break through by bowling 1 of the openers.

On the other hand the other opener played a real curate's egg of an innings. He played and missed often, played a few unconventional and unconvincing shots which got all the Sarisbury boys goat up but he also played some delightful shots and showed some clean striking of the ball.

Neil came on to replace Joe and Keith replaced Matt.

Neil struck first and Pete took a good catch at point to remove no3 and with Alton up with the run rate the ball before drinks in the 21st over Neil at last got the opener out nicking and away swinger to first slip.

I say first slip because it was going straight down his throat until Simon lept like a Salmom and poached it!!!!!

At drinks Alton were 90-3.

Neil took himself off and brought on Freddy and both he and Keith kept it tight and Alton gradually started to fall behind the run rate. With 10 overs to go Alton needed 100 runs they lost two more wickets 1 to Freddy and 1 to Keith who bowled 11 overs and although he only got 1 wicket did bowl decent lines and no Alton batsman ever got on top.

Neil replaced Keith with Craig and Neil replaced Freddy with himself. Craig stuttered in his first couple of overs to find any rythym, and at a pivital point during his spell when it could of gone either way, Craig began to find his rythym and was beating the Bat with his away movement.

Neil picked up a wicket towards the end and Alton were 7 down by the close but 60 runs short. It was surprising to see their middle order batts not really having a go and the game limped to the end with Sarisbury winning comfortably.

For all you readers out their waiting my IMO HERE IT IS ON THE GAME.

Excellent start with the bat laid the foundations of a competeive total, Bowlers bowled well the fielding was good without being exceptional, and the better side clearly won.

However, at one stage I did ask to the boundary if anyone had ear plugs because boy oh boy do the lads chirp!?!!? I have also questioned whether ALL the lads in the team wanted it, and on yesterdays performance you can see that evrey single one played with purpose and desire and enjoyable game to Umpire until the last 1/2 dozen overs when it became a bit boring but that was more down to Alton's style then ours.

Gooders
