Match Report

On a hot sticky afternoon Freddy did the unusaual and won the Toss ( can we expect more supririses like this Fred?) and decided to bat.

The wicket looked fine, but as suspected the lack of pace in the Flamingoes Square was all too evident for the whole match.

Colin, one of four players to make his debut, opened up with Chris. Both batsmen started circumspectly and after 6 overs only 5 runs were on the board. This unspectacular start, was needed as the Flamingoe openers gave very little away and Colin and Chris did not panic.

As the openers began to tire they upped the run rate and a commendable opening partnership of over 50 was posted before Chris lost his off stump.

Then entered Pete, and I must say he was the ONLY bat on either side who made the wicket look easy. His strokes from the very first ball was a joy and he soon had the opposition on the back foot.

So much so they tried to strangle Pete's class by denying him the strike. Colin tried to rotate as best he could but some fine bowling and good fielding denied Pete and perhaps this was the reason for his downfall, after being starved of deliveries for 3 or 4 overs Pete inexplicably lofted the seamer to long off who took the catch at about the third attemp. Pete had made a brisk 30 odd, and as stated already the runs scored just oozed class.

Simon came in next at 92-2 3 balls before drinks in the 24th over. Soon after Colin went, after a patient knock of 20 odd, he showed stick ability which is need for out top order and he can be satisfied with his first contribution to the team.

Simon was then joined by Matt, and with 20 overs to go they both set about upping the run rate.

The difference in techniques was clear, Simon by playing stylishly and hard running, Matt by some bludgeoning blows. They pushed the score onto 150 before Simon was out trying a deft glance to third man, caught by the Keeper.

In marched Freddy and together he and Matt continued the run scoring taking the score over the 200 mark in 8 overs before Freddy wentLBW in the penultimate over. Meanwhile Matt had passed his 50 and was joined by Bondy who in the last 11 deliveries score 19 further runs with Bondy getting 15 of them before getting caught on the last ball of the innings.

Sarisbury totaled 234-6 and besides Petes classy short knock the star was Matt, his technique may not be out of the MCC manual but he has a good eye and I thought he paced the innings extremely well.

Flamingoes bowlers worked tirelessly and no one disgraced themselves, however, their attack on the day did lack a bit of penetration and they may struggle this season.

After Tea Freddy opened up with Tom Clark and Phil Jewell, both making their debuts for the firsts, Tom got the first break through with the opener caught in second slip. A couple of overs later and Phil got his first wicket again a 2nd slip catch, and Bondy has bagged a brace in the slips.

at 9/2 in the 5th over things looked very bright. Tom and Phil bowled 6 over spells and both bowled well without any further reward. Tom bowling from my end was impressive, except for the 4th bowl in 3/4 consecutive overs which was wide. However, that aside a very good start for the lad.

After 12 overs Shaun replaced Tom and his first over was a tad bad, that said thereafter he bowled really really well and although he did not get a wicket, he did have two cathces put down, shaun showed promise.

At the other end Matt replaced Phil and during this spell 3 catches were put down in all, and all to the same bat who went on to post over 50. ( More on this later)

Freddy replaced Matt and Dave Agha also making his debut replaced Shaun. Freddy picked up the wicket of the opener which left Flamingoes on 87/3 in the 26th over.

At this point Sarisbury seemed in control. However, with the next 10 overs no further wicket fell, and it did not look likely either as Flamingoes were on 135 in the 36th when the batter who was dropped 3 times was finally out, Tom had replaced Freddy and Freddy caught him at Long Off.

The 6th wicket partnership was now the key and the two batsmen very nearly won the game, they certainly put them in the box seat with them on 197/5 in the 43rd and both hitting some big blows. It has to be said at this time, that the bowling did look a bit vulnerable under pressure with too many release balls being bowled during this time.

By this time Freddy turned to Phil Jewell, who despite going for a big 6 in his first comeback over did show how to bowl at the death, IE FULL LENGTH AND AT THE FEET TO STOP THE BATTERS FROM GETTING THEIR ARMS FREE FOR BIG HITS.

However, Matt got the break through with a long hop that Colin took a safe catch on Cow corner boundary.

Then in the next over Matt again got the other vital break through with a direct under arm hit on the stumps to run out the other big hitter still left out in the middle. ( I know guys amazing isn't it, especially for all those who saw the fielding drills the night before where Matt couldn't hit an elephants arse with a banjo!!!!

At this point on 197-7 Phil mopped up the tail quickly and Flamingoes fell 28 runs short on 206 all out.

Over all it is a nice feeling that the Firsts get off to a winning start, however, complacency must not set in, Catches win matches, that saying is a true now as it was in times gone past, and perhaps a better side would not be as forgiving when 3 chances go down.

Also concern must be for how the lads bowled when under pressure, for flamingoes to score 62 runs off 7 overs between overs 36 and 43 was not good viewing. Bowlers must plan for where they are going to bowl at the death and bowl to it and their field.

However, that can be worked on in training guys, please make the effort to support Fred in his desire to bring a touch more professionalism to the club.

Anyway enough of that well done lads and a useful 23 points garnered.

Your man in the Middle.

Gooders
