Match Report

3in3 the latest win came at a very very windy St Helens field against a side that was playing in the bronze league last year.

Freddy continued the habit of winning the toss and opted to bat first on what looked a very easy paced wicket.

As Colin arrived late Freddy promoted Squidge to open with Chris, this turned out to be a masterstroke not only by Freddy but also Colin for not arriving on time!!!!

Against what was a very good opening attack Chris and Squidge batted circumspectly with only a Chris boundary showing on the scoreboard by the end of the 5th over.

In the 9th over with the score on 16 Chris got out to a proper cricketing dismissal. The opener who was bowling into the wind, was getting away movement and Chris got a nick to a delightful delivery which was snaffled behind the stumps.

Out strode Pete, all nonchalant and confident, Pete got off the mark immediately with a 2 before very next ball the bowler produced an identical delivery to Pete that got Chris, Pete duly nicked it but this time the keeper put down an easy chance. That was IMO the big moment of the day and although 10 overs later slip put down another regulation chance offered by Pete, both chances were proper cricket incidents, good balls played in the MCC guidlines for defence and two drops!!!

Anyway enough of that Pete and Squidge set about upping the run rate and building a PARTNERSHIP, training Friday night this concept was driven home to the lads this is what wins matches not individuals.

What we did not know early on was just how good this partnership would turn out to be.

In the next 28 overs both squidge and pete put on 178 runs an average of 6.35 per over.

The batting was a joy to watch, Pete with immaculate timing, power and flair, complimented by Squidge who was determined, graceful at times and unflapperable.

I am going to be a little churlish here, the only thing I could see from the middle that they could have improved was their running, perhaps a few singles may have been missed, but as I said it is churlish, because I would defy anyone who was not a Portsmouth player or supporter to NOT enjoy the PROPER cricket both squidge and pete played.

Pete was first to go soon after reaching his ton and with 11 overs to go the slog fest was on.

What a platform the boys laid.

Bondy came in and went again, chasing a wide one whcih in normal circumstances he would have left, Matty came in next and his running between the wickets is something the boys should study, he made squidge run quick singles and two's and they put on a another partnership of 50 in 8 overs before Matt fell going for a big one!!!

The last overs produced some frenetic cricket as is the norm sacrifices were made in the attempt to score more runs and Sarisbury finished up on a very good 274-6.

After Tea, Tom and Phil opened up Portsmouth put a hitter into bat as opener and he got after Phil a bit but Tom eventually got him knocking the top of off stump.

after 15 overs they were 61-1 the same score as Sarisbury after their 15 overs.

Freddy removed Tom and brought on Matty J and relieved Phil by bringing on Sean.

Sean got the next breakthrough trapping a guy LBW, and despite Sean's encouragement for the player to walk to the Pavillion it took the intervention of the umpire to explain that yes he was out and be a good chap now and go take your pads off!!! Well something like that was said!!!!!

Soon after Matty got the first of his 2 lbws from my end and the next over Colin took an amazing catch at long on to dismiss a dangerous bat. The catch was even more impressive considering the near gale force winds, all that training eh Colin!!!!

At 89-4 in the 23rd over the game looked all but over.

However, not for the first time this year we let the intensity and focus slip during this spell and some loose deliveries was punished particuarly by the left hander who looked a very good player.

Anyway, although we had the runs on the board to spare this time, PORTSMOUTH were never in with a realistic chance of winning and when Tom came back for his second spell and then Sean they wrapped the game up with PORTSMOUTH all out for 224 in the 44th over.

The two youngsters Sean and Tom both picked up 3 wickets apiece, and deservedly so, Matty weighed in also with 3 and Pete got the left hander out with a great piece of fielding running him out going for the second.

Two moments of cricket summed up the difference between the two sides for me:

Pete getting dropped on 2 and then going on to score a glorious ton and arguabably PORTSMOUTH best/dangerous bat being caught superbly by Colin.

Catches do win matches and it is good to see the players turning up to practice Fridays , put the effort in guys and you will get the rewards.

Lastly, Phil needs to buy Freddy more beers as this time with 9 10 jack coming out Freddy did not allow Phil the opportunity to mop up the tail as usual!!!

That said Portsmouth did bat all the way down as one would expect from a bronze side last year.

Gooders
