Match Report

On a cloudy and subsequently sometimes rainy day the Firsts went down to an Alton side who showed they will be there or thereabouts by the end of the season.

Freddie won the toss and chose to bat, a decision that was no doubt influenced by having to wait for Sammy to appear taken from the seconds at such short notice.

Sarisbury opened up with both Col and Squidge facing them on a dry wicket was two very experienced opening bowlers who got plenty of movement off the seam, both ways.

Batting was extremely difficult and as someone said after the game the first loose delivery was not bowled until about the 9th over!!! Such was the Alton's bowlers in control.

Squidge was first to go in the 13th over with the score on 20-1.

In came Bondy and the struggle continued as Alton's control of the game was total at this point.

Bondy tried to inject some increase in Tempo but both batters were not helped by a stop for rain.

Bondy was next to go at 47-2 in the 25th over as Altons young leg spinner was bowling some decent lines and the ever young Halfacre from my end went through his 12 overs.

In came Matt and after a second walk off for rain which included an unhappy incident in the middle that best be saved for another day, tea was decided by the Alton umpire and I presume Captain to restrict the loss of further play by as much as possible.

After Tea the tempo was upped with Matt showing what a smart cricketer he is becoming.

Colin eventually fell for a hard working 30 and Sammy then joined Matt and they both began running hard between the wicket.

Matt fell next and Freddie sent Jewelly in who as it turned out had an excellent game, Sammy went soon after and Freddie came in and he and Jewelly hauled our total up to a respectable score of 182-6.

With a 10 minute change over and calculation of runs required and overs lost Alton were set 154 to win in 35 overs.

The two young guns opened up, Tom (I only bowled 1 bad ball!!) Clark and Sean (yeah man I'm cool) Tooley could not find their rhythm against a very agressive Alton batter.

Although both young guns will admit they have bowled better, the batter did play some audacious shots, many were ugly, but highly effective, as he gave the impression he knew his game and where he would score.

Freddy had to make changes as after 7 overs Alton were 54-0. However Dave A who bowled 4 and Freddy from my end between them could not stem the tide as the Alton opener upped his agression even further rattling over 70 for his side. At 97-0 after only just 15 overs and 1 more break for rain which reduced the target to 150 off 34 overs Freddy turned to Jewelly who got two wickets in one over including the dangerous opener.

At this point Sarisbury smelt a chance, slim but never the less a chance and over the next 10 overs put the squeeze on Alton, wickets tumbled Freddy got 3 and Jewelly another two as Alton faltered to 141-7, however despite this fine fight back by both bowlers and the fielders who were excellently backing up the two bowlers Sarisbury could not quite close Alton out who eventually limped over the winning line with 3 wickets in hand and 6 overs to spare.

I dont think it is wrong to say that Alton had the best of the conditions today and if you compare scores after 15 overs in the respective innings Sarisbury were 22-0 whilst Alton were 97-0.

We managed to score a decent total in the end because we were NOT 20-4 as we could quite easily have been if both our openers had not been so determined.

Our first 15 overs bowling however, contained too many release balls, coupled with an unorthodox yet competent Alton batter put pressure on our young attack. However the subsequent fight back showed what a good team Freddy has assembled and I am sure more wins are in the offing, if players both learn from and continue to bring intensity to their game.
