Match Report

Firsts move back to the top with a comfortable win, played in a friendly spirit against Fawley at the Hollow.

The 'Spirit' of cricket is alive and kicking as both sides showed no dissent, no tantrums, accepting umpires decisions and included 'Friendly' banter in a game that was always going to go to the home side after posting 260 odd in the first innings.

On a dampish Hollow Fawley won the toss and asked Sarisbury to bat.

The openers Col and Squidge put on 75 for the first wicket and from such a solid foundation a big score was on the cards. Add the fact that Pete who came in at 3, and scored 114, is batting at the correct slot, having some protection from the new ball so in most games as he did yesterday he can concentrate on playing his wide variety of shots.

Pete got valuable support from Bondy, then Matt( who did struggle to time the ball) but both showed a willingness to run hard and turn 1 into 2's and 2's into 3's.

When Pete went after turning down an easy 2nd run the ball before in order to return to the strike, Freddy saw Sarisbury to maximum batting points and beyond with the aid of Otis and despite Tom coming in for the last few balls and patting the last ball back down the wicket for a RED INK!!!

However, the undoubted highlight of the day was Pete's ton, it was a geniune pleasure to watch how easy he made it all look, with timing, power and a little touch of arrogance, (which is no bad thing). I defy anyone who watched his innings yesterday to say they did not enjoy it (unless of course you were a Fawley player!!!)

Fawley in the field looked a couple of bowlers short to be honest. The 2 lads that bowled the 24 overs from my end, the big tall opener and the off spinner, both looked decent enough, they tended to get close in to the wicket and bowl stump to stump, however the bowlers from the other end did not look able to trouble batsman and our lads managed to milk them easily enough. It is in the field that Fawley can have most cause to regret, they dropped Pete twice on his way to a ton and once after. At around 40 and then 70 the second chance really was regulation.

At tea the feeling was Sarisbury had about 40 or so too many. However if Fawley got off to a good as start as Sarisbury did then anything can happen. However that was not to be as Sean bowling from my end put 2 back in the hutch with 17 on the board after 8 overs.

With a combined age of 34 for our opening attack and add in the fact that 6 players are 23 or under it really is exciting times for the club. This was demonstrated with intense fielding, some excellent ground fielding in the first 25 overs.

Parratt, Fawley's quality no 3 bat, along with the skipper did manage to put a 69 run partnership together, playing some sweet drives and pulls however on 59 Parratt holed out to the Hammonds in Keiths first over. Pete taking the catch at Long ON.

Soon after Keith got another playing on, Freddy then picked up the 5th and Fawley were all but out of it on 105-5 after 28 overs. At this point the intensity in Sarisbury's fielding, as it has done in previous games, slipped for a while and although Fawley's off spinner came in and bludgeoned his way to 40 odd with some very clean hitting the game was meandering to its inevitable conclusion.

That said with 5 overs left 3 wickets were needed when the heavens opened, but to the credit of both sides with the end in sight both sides agreed to continue, and with Fawley trying to garnish an extra batting point to get past 175 and Sarisbury needing to bowl them out for maximum bowling points it turned a bit frenetic!?

The fact that it was by 2 overs left so wet, Freddy turned to Col for his flighted Filth for 1 over and Bondy whose off spin is more orthodox and now 2 wickets needed.

Well Colin got 1 and Bondy with the last ball of the 48th over getting the last wicket (how crucial will that be come the end of the season?) Sarisbury got maximum points and Fawley got past 175 for another batting point.

As said at the begining an enjoyable game played hard but fair with much credit for this going to the Fawley players, and this win will send the boys into the next match with confidence, but let's hope not complacency. As for Fawley they probably will now settle for mid table this season, lets hope they can beat a couple of challengers for the title before the season is over!!!!
