Match Report

On possibly the best weather day of the season, (a good omen I kept telling myself!!!) Freddy worried me by losing the toss and Calmore opted to bat first on what turned out to be a decent wicket, but in truth lacking pace.

Tom and Phil opened up and it was Phil who struck first in the 7th over taking two wickets, the second was very wide and the new batter slashed to slip where Bondy, ever reliable took a smart catch.

Tom then got in on the act by getting his wicket in the 9th over and Calmore were tottering at 24-3.

Tom was replaced by Matt and Phil by Freddie and Matt got his wicket in the 17th over, 61-4, then just before drinks break in the 24th Freddy got out the useful looking left-handed no 5 bat and Calmore looked out of it at 82-5.

150 at this stage looked likely, however the Calmore bats 6 and 7 had different ideas and for the next 15 overs they repaired the early damage.

In this time Freddy used Keith and Colin, and brought Matt back from my end and so at 145 in the 38th over the wicket finally fell, however, not the batter who Colin and keeper Otis was adamant got a thick nick, but refused to walk.

This was not the only incident in a tense game that caused consternation, but in defence of the panel umpire, who I thought had a decent game, if he did not see a deflection or hear a nick he cannot give it.

Anyway a left handed clubber came in next and did exactly what it says on the tin and clubbed anyone Freddy tried to the short sided boundary hitting 4 sixes in his 30 odd. He eventually went on 187 and by the 47th over Calmore were finally all out with Phil being the pick of the bowlers getting a 5 for.

At tea celebrations were a little muted because although we were up with the 5 bowling points news came through of Bramshaw all out for 190 odd and it looked certain that Portsmouth and Southsea would chase that moderate score down easy enough.

My thoughts went to the facts that if we have a weakness this year it is in chasing down scores, we seem to make hard work of it and without Pete, who sadly could not play, we were looking for some other bats to stand up and be counted.

So who would that be.

In the end it was a team effort chasing the score down, and with incidents to boot.

First of all Col went early, Matt came in at 3 as Pete was not here, and he and Squidge put on a stand 93 for the second wicket. At drinks, 24 overs we were on 103-1 an excellent position as these two batted really well against some decent bowling.

There was one incident during this time that is worth mentioning, Squidge was receiving, score was around 40 when all the players went up for another thin edge and all the Calmore players were celebrating not even waiting to look to me to see if I was going to give it.

I heard nothing and saw no deflection, so like the panel Umpire Ken in the first innings I said not out.

Then after drinks we went on a mini collapse, Matt got to 50 and then got out next ball caught, D'oh! Then next over Squidge went playing a nothing sort of shot, caught at mid on for a gritty 40.

Bondy came in and his touch looked good but kept hitting the field and I though don't think its his day today, and true 4 overs later he was out and we were then on 114-4 with 29 overs gone.

Squeeky bum time. Freddy came in and he and Sam started off by going into block mode and the run rate went up and up, GULP.

Calmore bowlers were very decent, I have not been too impressed with bowlings attacks all that much this season from teams we have faced, each team usually has between 1-3 good bowlers but some very average ones to make up the numbers, but I thought Calmores bowlers, all used looked good.

Anyway, 1 criticism I have is when Fred goes into block mode he really does BLOCK!!!

Perhaps manipulating the ball around a bit especially to the fuller deliveries would help rotate the strike better.

Anyway with 10 overs left 60 were required, when Freddy and Sam upped the tempo, running hard, well hard for Freddy anyway!!! And with some belligerent hitting we kept up with the run rate.

Another incident during this time happened when Sam was bowled by a no ball for height as it was full toss passing him above waist height.

Fortunately for me Ken gave that decision, and although you could see Calmore were visibly upset when their skipper got confirmation that it was Ken's decision and I played no part in it he accepted it.

Freddy then hit a big six and how unlucky got caught out going for another to the only player on the boundary!!!!

In strolled Otis with the score on 185 with 3 1/2 overs left and 20 needed, Calmore smelt blood again.

This was tense, you could see people nervous on the boundary edge, and every run was greeted with a roar from the now increasing crowd.

Otis's first ball dispatched for 4 over the bowlers head and he and Sam saw us home with some hard and I mean very hard running/scampering and some lusty blows.

Sam finished on 37 not out and again showed as he did last week how to play as a middle order bat, he was just brilliant, after the match I even told him I would support the scummy red and white stripes for the rest of weekend in recognition of his efforts!!!

With 1 1/2 overs to spare Otis hit the winning run the roar of delight and relief could be heard down the Green and we as they say chased a decent total down, and won, how apt, to secure they greatest achievement this club has had to date in the modern era.

Absolutely knackering but also bloody fantastic!!!!
