Match Report

Despite the interesting weather, the 1st secured a maiden SPL win.

After a hours delay due to a heavy shower, Fred won the toss and again we had a bat in which was now a 40 over per side game.

Colin and Si started off where they were last week with a really good opening stand. Runs were coming at a good pace despite the fact that when the bowlers put the ball in the right areas. When the opening bowlers finished their respective spells, we were 53-0 off 12. Then came a couple of change bowlers that struggled. Both feasted on some average bowling, taking the score to 99 in the next 4 overs! Si paticularly hitting the full tosses to the boundary, scoring 20 in 6 balls at one stage (2x4, 2x6). He brought up his 50 (43 balls) with a 6 into the car park. It smashed into the side window of a car, not breaking it. The owner commented that he never hit it hard enough. With the score on 106, a full toss proved to be his downfall. Hitting it straight at mid wicket for a brisk 56 (49 balls). Next over, Colin fell top edging to fine leg for a fine 40 (52). Jocky made it 3 wickets for 10 runs by running himself out for 3. Ten came a vital partnership between mself and Pete. Some good running coupled with some lusty blows from Pete gave us a 50 partnership before Pete fell to another full toss (33 from 24). Sammy Free came in for a little cammeo, I was starting to get into my stride, paticularly picking off anything on my legs. Sammy fell to a really good slower ball for 12 just when he looked like cutting loose. I got to 50 (59 balls) in the middle of a brisk 30 partnership with Fred before he was ct behind (7). Debutant Sam Floyd came in for the last over, and together we took the score to 239-6. I finished 64* (65 balls) and Sammy on 2.

Teas were excellent, especially the curried egg. A good effort.

Trojans got off to a flyer. 80 runs in 15 overs included a super spell of 5 overs for 9 runs from Jewelly! Opener Williams was paticularly keen to open his shoulders until he has ct behind off Fred. At 134 for 1 from 26 overs they were certainly well on course. Lovett looking very good with some super drives. Then Fred had a masterstroke. He turned to Colin, who with cap on, got a wicket frist ball ct behind. In over 31, with the score on 169, he got the big breakthrough. A slow loopy full toss (the moon ball) was hit straight at Matty. Lovett made a dangerous looking 55. With the run rate pushing near 8 an over, captain Le Bas opened up. Hitting a brisk 38 before Sammy Free took a super boundary catch. Jewelly took a diving catch in the deep to another Day full toss followed by a run out and Pete bowling a couple. Jewell took another catch from yet again a Day full toss and when Pete took a skier of a c&b we bowled them out for 212. We got their last 6 wickets for just 21 runs which just goes to show that if we bowl well, then wickets will fall at some stage, even if its not at the start of the innings.

Man of the Match must go to Colin (40 runs and 4-33) but what was really important was 2 good batting partnerships. The 100 opening stand and 50 from myself and Pete. Both came at crucial times. Must also note that our fielding this year has been superb. I can't remember a catch being dropped in any game and the ground fielding must save us 15 runs a game.

Well done superstars, sat in 5th place at the moment! Let's not ease up.

Bondy
