Match Report
Sarisbury hosted a US Portsmouth side who had scored a few runs in recent weeks so
when they won the toss and asked us to bat, we thought that they fancied chasing
anything.
Colin and Si opened as usual and briskly put on 33 until Si's boundary strewn 20 was
ended with a smart slip catch (20 off 24). Pete came in and crashed a 4 before being
caught at point. Jocky came in and set about the bowling, scoring at a good rate
before skying a short wide one for 27 (24). I joined Dayer at an interesting time.
We were 79-3 from 19 overs. With plenty of time left to build an innings, Colin and
I set about building our century partnership. We put on 101, with Colin passing his
50 from 80 balls, picking up some lovely boundaries via some tickled sweeps. I fell
to a short wide one also for 34 (39 balls) and was followed by Sammy Free for 8, 30
runs later. Colin scored Sarisbury's first ever Southern League ton from 129 balls
before falling, bowled for 115 (146). Freddie soon followed for 27 (37) and Tom
finished 10 not out from 8. Jewelly this week managed to make a single to the keeper
last ball, thanks largely to a fumble. So 260-7 was our final score.
Radski and Tom opened the bowling. Radski bowled a super first spell (8-0-14-0) but
it was Tom who got number 1, caught by me at 2nd slip in my arm pit. At 38 for 1
from 11, Pete then struck a double blow in his first over after replacing Tom with
some aggresive bowling. His slow bouncers were well directed with Galliers caught by
Keith at square leg and Marshall at slip by me via his gloves. Some good bowling
then led them to trickle to 79 before Dayer (Keeping wicket) took a catch off of
Fred followed by Sammy catching one at mid on. Dayer then took another catch,
standing up to Jewelly. Jewelly got 7 and 8 bowled and Tom returned to bowl Lilley.
With the last 2 batsman dropping anchor, Si got a maiden bowl for the 1's without
much success, then came our very own Harmy. Sammy Free with his gentle in-duckers
finished things off to have career figures of 1-1.
So we won by 132 runs. A very good batting display was followed by an equally good
bowling/fielding performance. Dayer did what we've been looking for for a season and
a half; batting for more than 40 overs so that others can bat around him. He batted
really well. Radski and Tom bowled as good an opening spell as I've seen for the
last 2 seasons. They gave nothing to hit in the opening 9 overs, the first boundary
coming via a top edge. 1 thing to note though. We always talk about wickets in hand
going into the last half dozen overs. We only moved from 228 in the 44th over to 250
in the 49th. Thats only 4.4 an over with 5 wickets remaining. Something to maybe
work on next week. Just think we faced too many dot balls when maybe a single could
have been manufactured.
Not to take anything away from a very good team performance. We've definitely sent
out a message to the rest of the league with our last 2 performances. Bring on the
big one next week, Fair Oak.
