Match Report
The last game of the season saw already relegated Purbrook come to The Hollow. Fred lost the toss and we were fielding.
A slow start saw Tom get the first wicket caught at slip by Si with the score on 9. We had to wait until the 14th over until Pete bowled the other opener. This was followed in the next over by Si taking a one handed catch in the gully off of Jocky. Runs were slow coming, as were wickets until the opposition's captain finally decided to have a go at Fred, being caught for a 34 ball duck (ouch)!! I got the next wicket after my longest spell of the season followed by a wicket from Jewelly. 2 in one over from Fred soon followed before Pete and a run out left them 155 all out (48.5 overs)
Teas were excellent, Welsh cakes and plenty of egg in many different forms.
Pete and Si continued their successful opening partnership. They received their first failure, Pete going for 25 (40) with the score on 30. Si batted with care against a couple of decent opening bowlers on a pitch that started to play up a bit. Jocky and Si saw us to 103 before Si was lbw for 31 (69). Jocky and Colin then saw us home, Jocky reaching 50 from 64 balls and finishing 59* (77), Colin 23* (11) taking 16 from the final over of the season.
Another resounding victory, 66 points out of 66 for the final 3 league games and finshing 7th (apparently Senior's pre season prediction). At the rep game on the Island yesterday, a few people were impressed with our first season in Bronze, so we should be very proud. Purbrook were comfortably the worst team we've played all season. Having said that, we bowled very well again. Jewelly's figures (10-3-16-1) typified his season. Not many wickets, but not many runs also. Tom led the bowling attack well despite a slow start and should be happy with 18 wickets, maybe 25 next year? Fred marshalled us well again, especially when confidence was a little low, he didn't panic. Hopefully next year, with some more consistent availability, we could maybe compete at the top like Gosport did this year. A great season by all.
