Match Report
The opening match for each of the Academy-style sides in the Mens B League at Fleming Park saw the Ian Farley's Scorpions chase down 147 for victory over Dave Mitchard's Stingrays. As with many indoor matches, wides were prominent and both sides will have to improve on the numbers of extras conceded if they are to win many games in this league.
Both sides made changes from the advertised line-ups and some "over-age" yet still young replacements appeared. Stingrays batted first and captain Dave Mitchard was run out for 4 by a direct hit from Chris Oliphant and Jack Cranston and Rob Carpenter had restricted the 'visitors' to just 14-1 from 3 overs. Ed Ruff and Lewis Mitchard then put on a century partnership, helped considerably by some wayward wides and a spate of no balls in mid-innings. Lewis' third six took him to retirement (27) and Rob Clinch hit his only two balls for three apiece but Ed (24) was run out off the last ball of the innings. Pick of the bowlers in a total of 146-2 off 12 overs was Rob Carpenter with just 12 coming from his 2 overs (skipper Ian Farley miscalculated the overs otherwise he would have surely bowled three, but it was hard out there skippering, keeping wicket in place of the once-again injured Matt Spicer and keeping tally of overs).
147 looked a difficult target but wides and runs came steadily. Rob Carpenter was run out for 13 in the 3rd over via Dave Mitchard's handy work but Tom Farley played sheet anchor, allowing Chris Oliphant to pick off singles and sixes to keep the scoreboard ticking over. Ollie Challis bowled beautifully and troubled the batsmen with spin, flight and even some swing but with the Scorpions on 82-1 at halfway, he was fighting a losing battle. Chris belted his third six to retire for 30 but Ian Farley was run out for a duck as Rob Clinch reacted well to the ball bouncing back off the back wall. With 13 balls to spare, Jack Cranston hit a no ball and gained four runs from overthrows to win the match. Tom had batted through for 22 not out, but nevertheless had clouted a couple of sixes.
Only four wickets fell, all to run outs. Over half the runs came from extras and that must be a starting point for improvement. Scorpions 14 points, Stingrays 4.
