Match Report

After an excellent start in the field, Sarisbury Scorpions fell to defeat by 23 runs to Trojans B at Fleming Park.

Trojans batted first but struggled early on thanks to some fine bowling from Jack Cranston and Rob Carpenter with Jack bowling one of the openers and a second being run out with the score just 34 in the 5th over. It took until the last ball of over number six before we bowled a wide but a Trojans counterattack in the later overs set up a challenging total. We did effect two more run outs but Trojans' aggressive running between the wickets did force misfields and further chances of run outs went begging. Still, overall, the bowling was much improved with just 21 runs coming from wides but, with two batsmen retiring and returning to score 36 and 40 not out, Trojans notched an imposing score of 147-4.

A wicket in the 2nd over as Tom Farley was run out was not what the doctor ordered but we scored steadily as Rob Carpenter and Chris Oliphant took the score past 50 in the 5th over. Scoring was never easy though against a good fielding side but Chris was desperately unlucky to be caught off the roof. Once two more quick wickets fell with Rob run out for top score of 21 and Ian Farley bowled by a swinging delivery, we were very much in damage limitation territory at 78-4 and gathering what runs we could. Aided by a number of wides, Jack Cranston and Matt Spicer took the score to 124, with some good running including two lots of '6 wides', but both were out in the last over off consecutive deliveries.

Certainly not a thrashing but we never really threatened to reach the 148 target that was perhaps 20-30 more than looked likely at the halfway stage of the first innings. It is difficult to field the ball spinning off the side walls but we must also not give away easy runs with rash or panicky shies at the stumps. The running between the wickets was better and more decisive from the opposition, who picked up 16 'bread and butter' 3s compared to our 6, whereas the 1s were 22-15 in our favour.
