Match Report

In a match that didn't finish until after half past nine, Sarisbury Scorpions were cruelly tipped out of the Cup by Hedge End B off the penultimate ball with last man standing.

It may have been a wet and windy weekend but it wasn't exactly raining runs in the early overs of the Scorpions' innings. Ian Farley hit two fours in the 1st over but after 7 overs, we only had 49 and both Tom Farley and Matt Spicer victims of the wicket-keeper, one stumped one caught. Ian retired for 25 while Jack Cranston and Toby Mitcheson picked up the pace with some good hits and running until Toby was run out for 9 and Jack run out for 18. Young Mike Edwards clouted a bright and breezy 12 and four 3s in the last over took us to 116-5 with Ian Farley 34 not out. It had been a good recovery and at least something for our bowlers to defend.

Just two wide balls and no runs came off the first over from Jack Cranston before Dr Mike surgically removed two batsmen in his opening five balls. Good work by Matt Spicer (who had an excellent stint behind the stumps) effected a run out and Hedge End were 19-3 from 3 overs. Tom Farley produced a really fine spell (1-18 off 3) and trapped the opener lbw for 17 to put us well on top and with 4 overs left, Hedge End still needed 53 with the last pair at the wicket. We did however bowl enough wides (57 runs in total) to keep our opponents in the contest and as the two batters gained confidence, the score passed the ton and defeat seemed inevitable until Dr Mike, rather fortunately, cleaned up his 3rd victim off his pad onto the stumps. Jack Cranston was entrusted with the last over, 9 needed with last man standing and a fair crowd gathered as the match on the other pitch had by now finished. The second ball was scuffed past a diving fielder for four and a scrambled three left just two needed off three balls. Despite two fine deliveries from Jack, two nudged singles brought Hedge End victory.

A fine margin between victory and defeat once again but this was certainly one that got away. With the game finishing so late, it may have been past one or two of the lads' bedtime that may have played into the hands of our opponents but there were a number of positives to take from this match and we must have hope of beating this team when we face them in the league.
