Match Report

Against certainly the best team we've seen or met this season, Sarisbury Scorpions lost by 33 runs. It might indeed have been a much heavier defeat but for a wonderful innings from Jack Cranston.

Losing the toss, Scorpions fielded first and we bowled and fielded fairly well but the quality of the Hambledon batting line-up told with every batsman making a contribution. The two openers both retired but Mike Edwards passed the bat a few times before hitting the top of middle stump with his very last ball. That was the only wicket taken by a bowler with a run out at the keeper's end. We really stuck at it and didn't bowl that many wides, contributing 29 to Hambledon's total of 142-2.

The fielding and catching of our opponents was outstanding, though the bowling sometimes wayward, wides and no balls making up almost half of our total. Rob Carpenter was caught brilliantly square on the off side in the second over but Ian Farley and Matt Spicer scored steadily, though helped by wides. They took the score past fifty before Matt was victim of a great low catch, a stroke that would normally have got him a four. From 52-1 we sank to 53-5 with Ian caught for 16 and Tom Farley first ball - credit to him (in a game played in very good spirit) that he walked despite edging to the keeper and being given not out. Mike Edwards was the third man to be dismissed in the one over, a high catch right by the back wall. So Jack Cranston was last man standing and we could only hope for respectability with over 5 overs left. In over number nine, he launched into a counterattack and three successive sixes and with an able and willing runner in Dr Mike, he took the score past the century mark. With his score on 34 and ours on 109, Jack was caught off the wall in the last over, but the last wicket had brought us two batting points in addition to the one bowling point.

No shame in losing to Hambledon, still holding a 100 per cent record - this won't be the biggest win they have this season, that's for sure.
