Match Report
Hedge End's A team proved too strong for a very young Stingrays team. Hedge End were put into bat & the Stingrays got off to a great start by running out the opposition skipper off the 3rd ball of the match for a duck through good work from Ed Ruff. Unfortunately this was as good as it got. We again bowled far too many wides (69) and the fielding lacked intensity, with too many soft runs on offer. However, on a positive note, I thought the bowling was actually better than in the previous match. Ed took the only other wicket (LBW) to fall. Hedge End finished their innings on 165-2.
This was clearly going to be a big ask, however, we did score 146 in our previous game, so we thought we were in with a chance. Unfortunately the quality of Hedge End's bowling proved too good. All of their bowlers were able to bowl straight and quick and as a consequence none of our batsmen really got going. With the score at 33-2 off 6 overs we were never in the hunt. We finished with 79 all out in the 12th over to lose by 86 runs, Dave Mitchard top scoring with 21 and Rob Clinch making 15.
Whilst this was a heavy defeat, it was a very useful experience for the boys, which will stand them in good stead as we progress through the season.
The next game is against Hedge End B on 22nd November, which, if we can learn the lessons from last night's game, I'm sure we have a good chance of winning.
Dave Mitchard
