Match Report

The Stingrays suffered another defeat on Sunday night against a pretty average Hedge End B team.

The game started in somewhat controversial fashion when it emerged that the opposition had turned up without a scorer. Hedge End claimed he was delayed and on his way, so the umpires allowed them to carry on with 6 fielders, although apparently under the rules one of their fielders should have gone upstairs to score. Ray pointed this out to the umpires who decided to allow Hedge End to continue with 6 fielders until their scorer arrived, with Sarisbury providing a substitute scorer. As it happened their scorer never arrived (at least I don't think he did).........

Anyway, back to the game. Martin Lander made his first start for the Stingrays, helpfully changing his working hours to enable him to make it on time. I lost the toss and we were put into bat. The first over was a disaster as Rob Clinch and Lewis Mitchard were both bowled for 0 by the spinner. This meant a rebuilding job was required. Myself and Ed Ruff started this but I then made a schoolboy error (somewhat ironic given the number of schoolboys in the team) by getting myself runout through not grounding my bat, getting out for 7. Ed Ruff launched a useful counter attack to top score with 21, including 2 sixes, before being runout. This left us on about 79-4 with 5 overs left meaning that Ollie Challis and Martin Lander had to ensure we batted out the overs to collect the wides, of which there were many, and try and get us to a respectable score. Ollie was eventually runout for 7 and Martin remained unbeaten at the end on 9, with the total on 114-5 (helped by 63 wides, although crucially in the last 2 overs there were no wides, and one of these overs was a maiden). This was a reasonable score, given our poor start but was probably 20 runs short of where we needed to be.

Hedge End B then got off to a flying start with the bat reaching 48-0 after 3 overs, but once the openers retired the scoring slowed dramatically due to some excellent straight bowling from Lewis, Ollie and Ed. We eventually took 3 wickets, 2 runouts and a bowled for Ollie, but this only served to enable the opener to come back in and he hit a six to win the match for Hedge End with 9 balls remaining.

The forecast of us being 20 runs short with the bat proved about right, but our bowling was excellent and we made a real fight of it. We only bowled 2 wides in the whole innings, compared to 17 in our first game, a fantastic improvement. Our fielding was also much better. We now just need to work on our batting, and the running between the wickets in particular, and with a bit of luck we'll get that first win.

Finally Hedge End B are definitely beatable, if we can get rid of one of the openers early, and thankfully we will get another crack at them in the cup. Bring it on!
