Match Report
Sarisbury's youthful Stingrays team won their first ever game in a thriller against high flying Totton & Eling. The team was bolstered by Danny O'Connell but it still contained 4 14/15 year olds. By contrast the Totton team included the mighty Dave Banks, who I understand is well known in these parts....
The Stingrays captain won the toss and elected to field. Billy Taylor took the gloves in the absence of Rob Clinch. Danny opened the bowling and proved his worth straight away by only going for 3 in his first over. He then followed this up with 2 other good overs and the other bowlers, Ed Ruff, Ollie Challis and Lewis Mitchard supported him superbly. The 4 guys restricted the opposition to 133-3, backed up by some excellent fielding. Ollie took the only wicket to fall to a bowler, following a great catch by Lewis, and Ed delivered the most economical figures, with just 22 coming from his 3 overs. Again we bowled very few wides, conceding only 26 runs to wides in total. Billy also did a grand job behind the stumps.
At the break we felt we were in with a good chance of chasing down this total, if we batted sensibly. However, after ball 1 it looked like our best laid plans were falling apart with Ed Ruff committing hari kari at the non-strikers end to depart run-out for a diamond duck. Things got worse when Dave Mitchard was out to an astonishing one-handed catch for 7. However, Danny and Lewis batted steadily to keep us up with the rate until Danny was bowled for 12 by a brute of a delivery from Dave Banks. Lewis was unfortunate to be run out shortly after for 16, leaving Ollie and Billy to score 50 from the last 4 overs. They responded brilliantly to this challenge, scampering between the wickets like Linford Christie and Carl Lewis (well nothing like them actually, but I am allowed journalistic licence). Ollie (14) finally sacrificed his wicket in the penultimate over but stayed around to run with the belligerent Billy. 14 were now needed off the last over. The boys took 8 off the first 3 balls and then Billy launched a big 6 off the next ball. This meant 4 were needed off 2 balls. Linford and Carl scampered a 3 off the next ball, but victory was secured when Dave Banks kindly donated an overthrow. What a fantastic victory against a very good team! Billy ended the game on 30 not out.
As we shook hands with a very sporting Totton team at the end, I must admit I had a rendition of Paper Lace's classic "Billy don't be a hero" going through my head, don't know why.
These boys have made huge progress over the last 4 matches and are all very talented players. We can now look forward to the rest of the season with real confidence.
