Following last year's very good season for the whole club there was an air of expectancy for the 1st team to be one of the front runners in 2003. Unfortunately with a third loss in the league to Bournemouth IIs in early July the season was effectively over and it was very disappointing to miss out on promotion for the 3rd year in a row. However, there were many positives to be taken from the season.
On the whole we were never outplayed by any of the top teams. The games against Lymington IIs, Hartley Witney and Bournemouth IIs could all have been won with a little luck and a bit more experience in the side.
The batting this year did look far more solid. On a number of occasions we successfully chased some sizeable targets, which is always a hard thing to do. Most of the batsmen played well at some point during the year. Significant contributions came from Phyl Journeaux, Brad Elliot, Matt Journeaux, Simon Orr, Jimmy Ingram, Andy Evans (hitting his maiden half century against Old Basing), Dave Newell, Dan O'Connell and Steve Bayliss who made a welcome return to 1st team duties.
A special mention must be made of Matt Journeaux. He was showing a lot of promise in the winter indoor leagues and this exciting potential materialised with two majestic knocks of 144 against Bramshaw and a new County 1 record of 204 not out against US Portsmouth IIs. Well done to you Matt!
In the bowling department there was not too much to talk about. Amogh's failed attempt to get a visa was a major loss to the side. His ability to consistently take early wickets was greatly missed. Dan O'Connell's finger injury a week before the start of the season did not help matters either. The one positive note was Jimmy Ingram's bowling. He has full control of his line and length and bowls at a good pace. He was rewarded with a call up to the Hampshire Under 19s and he fully deserves this year's bowling award. If Jimmy decides to move to a Southern League club then it is only right to wish him all the best in his attempt to fulfil his cricketing ambitions. The door is always open though, Jimmy.
I would, once again, like to thank the players, officials, supporters and other unnamed background faces for all your efforts. A particular mention must be made regarding the maintenance of the wicket. The 3 guys involved must be applauded as they have done a wonderful job in producing good pitches.
Finally, I would like to pay tribute to our retiring chairman, Andy O. He has over the past few years been the main driving force in ground maintenance, pitch preparation, the general running of the club and is the usual recipient of members. moans and groans. He has managed his tasks in a quiet unassuming manner and contends with individuals and groups with discretion and understanding. On behalf of the club I would like to thank Andy for his hard work and unrivalled dedication to the club. Perhaps now you can concentrate on your batting Andy.
